Angler's Second Lake Trout Lands Minnesota State Record
A Minnesota fisherman recently achieved an extraordinary feat on Lake Superior, landing a record-breaking lake trout. Joe Bouta, a 68-year-old from Benson, caught and released a massive 45.5-inch lake trout in early May, a catch that now stands as a new state record in the catch-and-release category, as confirmed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
This impressive catch was made during a guided excursion with Ethan Waytashek of Lake Superior Jigging Guide Service. Remarkably, it was only Bouta's second time ever catching a lake trout, with his first occurring just minutes before the record-setter. Despite high winds reaching up to 35 mph, which forced the group to alter their initial plans and stay closer to shore, Bouta managed to hook the giant fish using fresh smelt in approximately 100 feet of water. The seasoned guide, Waytashek, who has led clients to four catch-and-release state records in the past two years, initially underestimated the fish's size until it was measured on the bump board. The father-and-son duo, including Joe's youngest son Andrew, credited Waytashek's expertise for positioning them in the right spot.
The successful handling and release of such a large specimen, estimated to be between 30 to 40 years old, highlighted the importance of proper angling protocol. Waytashek guided Bouta on how to safely manage the fish for photographs and measurements before its release back into the lake. This memorable fishing trip, nearly canceled due to adverse weather, culminated in a truly significant catch that will be celebrated at the Minnesota State Fair, where Bouta will be honored alongside other state record holders. His son, Andrew, expressed his joy, emphasizing his father's lifelong passion for fishing and the poetic justice of this achievement.
This remarkable angling story underscores the thrill of the unexpected and the importance of expertise and perseverance in fishing. It not only celebrates a personal milestone but also highlights the conservation efforts through catch-and-release practices, ensuring the longevity of these magnificent creatures in our waters.
