While typically pursuing bass and crappies in this serene 915-acre lake, Tian's day took an unexpected turn. Utilizing his portable depth finder from his 12-foot rowboat, he located a school of fish near a drop-off in 35 feet of water. He cast a small 1/8-ounce red plastic-tail jig, anticipating a bite from crappies. Initially, he landed a couple of one-pound white perch. However, a much more substantial tug on his light spinning tackle and six-pound test line signaled a different kind of challenge. The fish's immense power made it difficult to manage, preventing him from bringing it to the surface quickly to avoid disturbing the school. Upon successfully netting his catch, Tian was astounded by its size, initially believing it to be a carp. After confirming its identity as a white perch with his mobile phone, he realized the potential significance of his catch. Later, at a Brooklyn supermarket, the fish registered an impressive 3 pounds, 4 ounces on certified scales, exceeding New York’s previous white perch record, established in 1991, by three ounces. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has since officially verified and certified Tian's white perch as the new state record holder.
