Avinox, a prominent innovator in the e-bike motor market, has unveiled its groundbreaking MG Concept motor at Eurobike. This latest development, forged through a collaboration with renowned bicycle manufacturers such as Canyon, Commencal, Mondraker, and Forbidden, marks a significant departure from existing e-MTB motor designs. The MG Concept distinguishes itself by incorporating an internal gearing unit, specifically a continuously variable transmission (CVT) system, into the motor itself, signaling a potential paradigm shift for electric mountain bikes.

Since its launch two years prior at Eurobike, Avinox has rapidly established itself as a key disruptor in the e-bike motor sector, with over 60 brands now integrating its power units. The introduction of the MG Concept further solidifies Avinox's commitment to pushing technological boundaries. Ferdinand Wolf, Avinox Product Experience Director, emphasized the company's continuous drive for innovation and its collaboration with industry leaders to bring about positive change and an unparalleled cycling experience for OEMs and consumers alike.

While precise specifications remain somewhat under wraps, the core innovation lies in combining Avinox's motor technology with an internal gearing unit that offers a gear range comparable to traditional 1x external drivetrains. Unlike typical internal gear hubs or continuously variable systems seen in urban bikes, the Avinox MG Concept is engineered for the demanding environment of mountain biking. Displayed in prototype frames from its partner brands, the MG Concept suggests a rapid progression towards commercial availability, potentially within the next year.

The integration of an internal CVT system offers numerous advantages. By centralizing the transmission weight within the bottom bracket, the MG Concept improves weight distribution and reduces unsprung weight, leading to a more responsive suspension. Furthermore, enclosing the gearing within the motor body protects it from external damage, minimizing maintenance and enhancing durability. The single-speed drive unit also facilitates the use of belt drives, as seen on the Mondraker concept bike, further lowering maintenance requirements. Avinox claims the internal gearing will require 'no maintenance during its lifespan,' a compelling benefit, although the inherent efficiency trade-offs of CVT systems compared to chain/derailleur setups may slightly impact range. However, Avinox anticipates a smaller, lighter platform adaptable across various e-bike categories, with performance metrics (up to 1,500W peak power and 150Nm peak torque) similar to its M2S motor.

Future iterations of the MG Concept are expected to include a regenerative braking system, designed to recharge the battery during descents. This feature, however, will require careful consideration of existing chain or belt tensioner designs, which typically do not interact favorably with regenerative braking. An additional security feature, a locking function to immobilize the pedals, will help prevent theft. The electronic shifting system promises uninterrupted power delivery and rapid gear changes, under 0.1 seconds. Although a CVT by nature, the MG concept allows riders to define discrete gear ratios, offering extensive customization. It also supports multi-shifting and AI-driven auto-shifting based on rider cadence, ensuring optimal pedaling efficiency. The system's ability to shift under load and at a standstill further enhances the riding experience.
