In a significant strategic move within the cycling and outdoor retail sector, major online outdoor gear and apparel retailer Backcountry announced its acquisition of Velofix, an extensive mobile bike shop franchise network spanning both the United States and Canada.

Backcountry's Strategic Expansion in Cycling Services

This acquisition, finalized on September 17th, although financial specifics remain undisclosed, marks a pivotal moment for both companies. Backcountry intends to seamlessly integrate Velofix's widespread mobile services into its existing bicycle assembly and delivery operations. This integration is designed to bridge the crucial gap between a bicycle arriving packaged at a customer's residence and its readiness for immediate use.

Velofix, a pioneer in the mobile bicycle service industry, operates with a team of 96 certified technicians. These skilled mechanics utilize custom-equipped vans, effectively transforming them into fully functional repair shops that can travel directly to customers' homes. Kevin Lenau, President of Backcountry, highlighted the immediate benefit: "A cyclist in a bustling city like Boston or a scenic locale such as Boulder can now purchase a bicycle from us and have a professional Velofix technician expertly assemble, tune, and deliver it ready for their inaugural ride."

This latest acquisition is part of a broader, aggressive expansion strategy by Backcountry since its purchase by CSC Generation in September 2024. Prior to Velofix, Backcountry expanded its portfolio with the addition of Utah-based Level Nine Sports in July 2025. Later that year, it further solidified its presence in the cycling market by acquiring Velotech, the parent company of prominent brands like BikeTiresDirect, Western Bikeworks, and TriSports. With Competitive Cyclist already under its umbrella, Backcountry is rapidly building a formidable collection of cycling-focused enterprises.

Beyond the cycling realm, Backcountry's growth extended into the general outdoor apparel and gear market with the acquisition of Coalatree in April 2026. The company also launched Backcountry Garage, an innovative incubator program aimed at fostering the growth of emerging outdoor brands by providing access to its extensive resources, expertise, and distribution networks.

While Backcountry has articulated its intentions to broaden Velofix’s service offerings, specific details regarding these enhancements and the timeline for their full integration into Backcountry’s operational framework have yet to be disclosed.

This strategic move by Backcountry highlights a growing trend in consumer-focused industries towards enhancing convenience and personalized service. By integrating Velofix's mobile expertise, Backcountry is not just selling bikes but delivering a complete, hassle-free cycling experience. This could set a new benchmark for customer service in the online bike retail space, providing valuable at-home support that traditionally only local bike shops could offer. It will be interesting to observe how this model evolves and impacts both the broader cycling industry and customer expectations.
