Barefoot Hiker Rescued in Rainstorm After Losing Gear

A hiker, discovered without shoes and covered in a plastic bag during a rainstorm in British Columbia's Lynn Headwaters Regional Park, recounted to his rescuers that he had misplaced his equipment the day before. The individual had reportedly been on the trail since the previous day, having stashed his backpack in a tree hollow to fetch water. Upon returning, he was unable to locate his gear, and subsequently lost his footwear after falling while searching in the dark.

The incident occurred on October 31st, when two trail runners alerted authorities to a man dressed in a black trash bag on the path to Norvan Falls. Park rangers and the North Shore Rescue (NSR) team quickly responded, locating the man approximately two miles from the trailhead. After providing warmth and assistance, the rescue team transported him back to the park entrance. Given that Lynn Headwaters Regional Park, a vast natural area near Vancouver, prohibits overnight camping and had already closed its backcountry for the season on October 30th, this situation underscores the importance of adhering to park regulations.

Don Jardine, a search manager with NSR, emphasized the critical importance of preparedness and good judgment for hikers. While efforts to find the lost backpack the following day were unsuccessful, Jardine stressed that hikers should always prioritize their safety. He advised turning back from a hike if reaching the destination becomes uncertain, especially with dwindling daylight and falling temperatures, to prevent similar dangerous predicaments.
