Bosch 2021 eBike Enhancements: New Nyon Display, Motor Upgrades, and Kiox Navigation

Bosch has revealed its latest advancements for the 2021 eBike range, focusing on significant software and hardware upgrades rather than entirely new motor designs. The spotlight is on a completely reimagined Nyon display, along with performance enhancements for several existing motor systems and an innovative crash detection feature. These developments aim to enrich the rider's experience through improved control, navigation, and safety.

The central innovation is the updated Nyon touchscreen computer, which marks a substantial departure from its predecessor. This new unit, resembling a dedicated cycling GPS device, boasts a vivid 3.2-inch, 384x454 pixel color display with an anti-reflective coating for optimal readability in varying light conditions. Its customizable interface allows riders to tailor data presentation, while advanced navigation features, including direct address input, touch-based map selection, and route imports from platforms like Komoot, provide comprehensive guidance. Crucially, the Nyon offers standalone GPS functionality once routes are synced, conserving phone battery. It also intelligently estimates range based on topography and assistance mode, providing practical guidance for longer journeys. For fitness enthusiasts, the Nyon integrates with heart rate monitors and displays rider power, suggesting a future potential for outdoor ERG mode functionality. This new Nyon will be compatible with all Bosch systems from 2014 onwards and will be available as a retrofit option from Autumn 2020 at a price of €399. Alongside the Nyon, three prominent Bosch motor lines—Performance Line CX, Cargo Line, and Performance Line Speed—receive software updates for 2021. The most notable upgrade is an increase in torque to 85Nm across these motors, designed to deliver stronger acceleration from a standstill and improved power delivery at lower cadences. This enhancement is particularly beneficial for cargo bikes when heavily loaded and for mountain bikes navigating challenging terrain. The eMTB mode on the new CX motor has also been refined for a more responsive and sensitive riding experience, especially in low gears, complemented by an 'Extended Boost' function for conquering technical obstacles. Furthermore, the Kiox display, a popular choice among riders, gains new navigation capabilities. Although it does not feature integrated GPS and requires constant synchronization with a smartphone, it can display route plots from the Bosch app or Komoot, offering clear guidance and distance-to-destination information. The Kiox also now supports customizable display metrics, allowing riders to prioritize the information most relevant to their ride. All these Kiox improvements will be rolled out via a software update in the summer. Bosch is also introducing a new 'Help Connect' crash assistance service through the COBI Bike app, initially targeting European markets (though requiring a German SIM card for UK users). Unlike basic crash detection systems, 'Help Connect' utilizes a staffed response center. Upon detecting a crash, the center contacts the rider to assess the situation and can dispatch first responders if communication is not possible, while simultaneously activating an audible alarm on the rider's phone to attract attention.

These innovations highlight Bosch's ongoing commitment to enhancing the electric cycling experience, making it safer, more efficient, and enjoyable.
