British Cycling Team Unveils Squad for Road World Championships in Montréal

British Cycling has officially revealed its 36-rider roster poised to compete for glory at the upcoming UCI Road Cycling World Championships in Montréal. This formidable team, featuring household names such as Tom Pidcock, Lauren Dickson, and Zoe Bäckstedt, is set to contend across elite, under-23, and junior categories in both time trials and road races, with the championship action kicking off this Sunday with the elite individual time trials.

Hopes for medal wins are high, especially with Tom Pidcock in exceptional form. Fresh off two top-10 finishes at the GPs de Québec and Montréal, and a recent victory at the MTB Worlds, Pidcock is setting his sights on the elite men's road race scheduled for September 27. He will be backed by strong teammates, including Oscar Onley, who recently earned the best young rider title at the Vuelta a España, and Adam Yates, a former winner of the GP de Montréal.

Zoe Bäckstedt, a standout in time trialing with four wins this season and a former under-23 and junior TT world champion, is a strong contender for a podium finish. She will be joined in the road race by Lauren Dickson, who recently celebrated her first professional victory at stage four of the Faun Tour Femmes. Dickson has impressed significantly in her debut Women's WorldTour season, securing third place overall at Itzulia and nearly breaking into the top 10 at the Giro d'Italia Women. Meanwhile, the under-23 women's race will see Cat Ferguson, recovering from an ankle injury sustained at the Giro, alongside Imogen Wolff. The elite men's time trial boasts talent from Callum Thornley and Ethan Hayter, both recent podium finishers in TTs at the Vuelta a España.

Stephen Park, the performance director for the Great Britain Cycling Team, expressed confidence in the squad, emphasizing the strength and balance it represents. He highlighted the team's mix of established world-class athletes and promising new talent, reflecting the significant progress of British road racing on both European and international fronts. This progress, he noted, is a testament to effective development programs, established pathways, and the robust domestic competition fostering a continuous stream of talent.
