Canyon Develops Custom 32-Inch Gravel Bike for LeBron James

In a groundbreaking development for the cycling world, Canyon Bicycles has unveiled a bespoke 3XL Grizl gravel bike tailored for NBA superstar LeBron James. This innovative design incorporates cutting-edge 32-inch wheels, a feature that has garnered significant attention within the cycling community. James, known for his imposing 6-foot-9-inch stature, has long faced challenges in finding a bicycle that offers a perfectly proportional fit, a hurdle Canyon's engineering team enthusiastically embraced and overcame.

LeBron James recently showcased his new Canyon bicycle on social media, immediately drawing the keen eye of cycling enthusiasts and experts. The bike's remarkable proportionality to his frame quickly signaled a departure from standard designs, leading to the confirmation that Canyon had indeed crafted a special 3XL Grizl model featuring larger 32-inch DT Swiss wheels. This marks Canyon's inaugural venture into building a gravel bike around this emerging wheel size, making James an ideal figure to test its capabilities.

Describing his initial experience, James enthused, "Big wheels, big tyres, let's roll!" He further noted the transformative difference compared to previous bikes: "On most bikes I've ridden, I was aware of the bike, where it didn't fit me, what I was working around. This is the first one that I didn't have to think about. That's what I love most about riding. It's just you out there and everything else is gone." Canyon has clarified that this Grizl model is not a mere prototype but a fully engineered custom bicycle, designed from the ground up to accommodate an athlete of James' unique physical dimensions.

Canyon's engineers relished the opportunity to create something specifically for the NBA icon. Matej Sömen, Grizl Design Engineer, stated, "It was the perfect excuse to explore the use of 32-inch wheels on an adventure bike." The company's Lead Engineer, Gravel, Wolfgang Kohl, added that the project represented a chance to produce "something genuinely cutting edge," requiring the collaboration of a full engineering team. Instead of merely extending an existing Grizl frame, which typically maxes out at 2XL, Canyon developed entirely new geometry and re-engineered its carbon construction. This approach was crucial to prevent excessive flex that a simple tube extension would have introduced.

The frame was manufactured using a high-pressure autoclave and a unique single-structure molding technique for the main triangle and rear stays, eliminating the need for bonded sections. This advanced manufacturing method, employing specialist partners in southern Germany, ensured a pristine finish that required no putty, grinding, or cosmetic paint. The bike's raw carbon finish, visible on the top tube and through the Canyon logo, reflects this meticulous construction. Custom CNC-machined Boost thru-axles and a bespoke seat clamp were also developed to manage James' power. Furthermore, custom mounts on the fork and frame provide ample carrying capacity, with a small front rack ingeniously designed to hold a basketball.

The introduction of James' custom Grizl coincides with a growing trend towards 32-inch wheels in the cycling industry, particularly in gravel and mountain biking. Other manufacturers like Scott, Salsa, Stinner, BTCHN', and Mosaic have also begun adopting this larger wheel format. Component makers are following suit, with Schwalbe supplying its unreleased 32-inch G-One RX gravel tires for James' DT Swiss wheels. Advocates for the larger diameter emphasize its enhanced speed and ability to traverse challenging terrain with greater ease, despite potential increases in weight and rotational mass.

For exceptionally tall riders like James, the primary benefit of 32-inch wheels lies in achieving optimal proportionality. Conventional frames often leave tall cyclists feeling cramped, with wheelbases and front centers too short for balanced weight distribution. By designing a custom frame around larger wheels, Canyon allowed these dimensions to scale with the rider, resulting in a bicycle that feels and handles more naturally. James' Grizl boasts an impressive 680mm stack, 470mm reach, 1,201mm wheelbase, and 476mm chainstays—dimensions rarely seen in mass-produced bikes. Canyon views this one-off build as an opportunity to refine new construction processes and shorten development timelines for future projects, both for professional athletes and the broader market. Sömen proudly declared, "We have Canyon's first 32-inch gravel bike. We have awesome features, we have a killer aesthetic, and we have a rider who has the right bike for the riding he does." However, Canyon emphasized that this specific model is a unique, one-of-a-kind creation and not available for commercial sale.

LeBron James' involvement with Canyon dates back to 2022, when he became a minority shareholder in the German company. In 2024, they launched the "Find Your Freedom" initiative, a cycling advocacy campaign aimed at encouraging wider participation in cycling. Canyon also supports the LeBron James Family Foundation's I PROMISE Program by providing bicycles, reflecting James' lifelong connection to cycling, which began with him riding to basketball practice and exploring his hometown of Akron on two wheels.
