Channel 5 Secures Rights for Tour de France Highlights and UK Grand Départ Live Coverage

Channel 5 has secured a significant three-year broadcasting agreement that will bring daily highlights of cycling's premier Grand Tours – the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, and Vuelta a España – to free-to-air television in the UK. This deal also notably includes live coverage of the 2027 Tour de France's initial stages, which will commence in the United Kingdom. This development addresses concerns raised after ITV's long-standing live Tour de France broadcasts ceased, ensuring that a broader audience can access top-tier cycling action without a paywall.

The agreement, announced by Warner Bros. Discovery and TNT Sports, comes after a competitive tender process. It dictates that Channel 5 will air free-to-air highlights for the Tour de France and Vuelta a España from 2026 to 2028, and for the Giro d'Italia from 2027 to 2029. Each evening, a one-hour highlights show will be broadcast at 7 pm, hosted by sports journalist Rebecca Charlton, beginning with this year's men's Tour de France. Furthermore, the first three stages of both the men's and women's 2027 Tour de France, scheduled to take place across England, Scotland, and Wales, will be shown live on Channel 5, with daily highlights also provided for the Tour de France Femmes.

This move is seen as a strategic effort to broaden the appeal and accessibility of elite cycling within the UK. Scott Young, an executive vice president at WBD Europe, emphasized that the collaboration with Channel 5 represents a major stride in expanding the sport's reach. He highlighted the commitment to offering fans comprehensive coverage across various platforms, combining a strong free-to-air highlights package with existing live broadcasts. Paul Bush, managing director for the 2027 UK Grand Départs, expressed enthusiasm for the news, emphasizing the importance of reaching a vast audience in anticipation of the Tour's return to Britain. Reemah Sakaan, president of Channel 5, echoed this sentiment, calling the Grand Tours the world's most prestigious cycling events. The channel's upcoming coverage, including daily highlights for the Tour de France this July, is set to kick off an exciting summer of sports programming, reinforcing Channel 5's dedication to delivering premium sporting events to millions of viewers and advertisers.
