UCI Announces Provisional Suspension for Cyclist Germán Darío Gómez

In a significant development, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announced on a recent Tuesday afternoon that Colombian cyclist Germán Darío Gómez Becerra has been provisionally suspended. The suspension comes after an Adverse Analytical Finding for Boldenone, a naturally occurring anabolic-androgenic steroid, and one of its metabolites. The prohibited substance was detected in a sample collected out-of-competition on December 28, 2025.

According to UCI Anti-Doping Rules, Boldenone and its metabolites are classified under S1.1 (Anabolic Androgenic Steroids) in the 2025 Prohibited Lists, which are established by the World Anti-Doping Agency and adopted by the UCI. Following the notification, Gómez retains the right to request an analysis of his B sample. The UCI has stated it will not provide further comments while the proceedings are ongoing.

Gómez, 24 years old, joined the Polti VisitMalta team, then known as Polti Kometa, in 2024. He achieved a notable sixth-place overall finish at last year's Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkiye, and his contract had been extended for another season just late last year.

The Polti VisitMalta team promptly issued a statement aligning with the UCI's decision and their own stringent anti-doping stance. A team spokesperson declared, "At Team Polti VisitMalta, we operate under a strict zero-tolerance policy towards doping. This principle is a non-negotiable foundation of our project and is clearly stipulated in all our contracts and in our Code of Conduct." In line with this policy, the team has suspended Gómez's contract, excluding him from all team activities until the resolution of the ongoing proceedings. The team further emphasized its "unwavering commitment to clean cycling" and pledged full cooperation with the UCI and all relevant authorities to ascertain the facts, upholding the values of fair play and integrity in the sport.

This incident comes on the heels of appeals made by the Movement for a Credible Cycling (MPCC) at the end of last year. The anti-doping group urged cycling's governing body to take decisive action against the "medicalisation" of the sport and to address the "expansion of the so-called grey areas" within cycling regulations.
