Two-time Tour de France stage champion, Dylan Teuns, has declared his departure from professional cycling following an unsuccessful search for a team for the 2027 season. The 34-year-old Belgian athlete recently completed two seasons with Cofidis, preceded by stints with Israel-Premier Tech, Bahrain Victorious, and BMC Racing Team.

A Career Marked by Accomplishments: Reflecting on Teuns's Journey

In a social media announcement on Thursday, Teuns shared his retirement, stating, "I reflect on a career with immense pride and appreciation, having fulfilled my deepest childhood ambitions." Simultaneously, in an interview with the Belgian publication Het Nieuwsblad, Teuns disclosed his desire to compete for an additional two years but was unable to secure a new contract.

He explained, "For months, I was aware of my precarious situation. My spring performance didn't meet my expectations, leading to an unprecedented contract dilemma." Teuns elaborated on the added stress of the Tour de France starting without a signed agreement. He noted that many teams echoed the sentiment of needing to "rejuvenate." Despite extensive discussions with three WorldTeams and two ProTeams, these negotiations proved fruitless. His remaining hope rested on talks with WorldTour team Lotto-Intermarché, but he received word last week that no position was available for him.

Unfulfilled Ambitions: Teuns's Desire to Continue Racing

Teuns expressed, "Ultimately, I concluded that joining a smaller team would not bring me greater satisfaction." He had a strong desire to continue for another two years with a WorldTour-level team that demonstrated high performance. He believed he still possessed the capability and was content to support a team leader or contribute to the Classics with a flexible role.

A Legacy of Victories: Highlighting Teuns's Major Triumphs

Throughout his 12-year professional career, Teuns accumulated 14 victories. His impressive wins include two Tour de France stages, specifically on the Planche des Belles Filles in 2019 and in Le Grand-Bornand in 2021. He also clinched a stage at the Critérium du Dauphiné in 2019 and a Classic win at La Flèche Wallonne in 2022. His most recent triumph occurred on stage one of the Tour de Romandie in 2022 while riding for Bahrain Victorious. He did not participate in any Grand Tours in 2026.

Gratitude and New Beginnings: Teuns's Message to His Supporters

On Thursday, Teuns posted on Instagram, "To all the fans, teammates, and staff members who have supported me over the years, both on the road and behind the screens: thank you!" He extended special appreciation to his parents, close friends, and girlfriend for their unwavering support during both highs and lows. He concluded, "Without all of you, this dream would never have materialized. It's time for a new chapter, but my passion for cycling will always remain."
