American cycling sensation Matteo Jorgenson's aspirations for the Ardennes Classics have been abruptly curtailed following a significant crash at the Amstel Gold Race. The unfortunate incident resulted in a fractured collarbone, forcing his withdrawal from the prestigious series of races. This setback comes despite meticulous preparation and high hopes from his team for a strong performance in the classics.

The mishap occurred approximately 42 kilometers before the race concluded on Sunday. Jorgenson, while part of a leading group including notable riders like Remco Evenepoel and Mattias Skjelmose, lost control on a slick corner, a consequence of wet conditions, immediately after Kévin Vauquelin. The impact saw him land heavily on his right side, leading to the diagnosis of a fractured collarbone.

His team, Visma-Lease a Bike, swiftly confirmed the severity of the injury and his subsequent inability to compete in the upcoming Flèche Wallonne and Liège–Bastogne–Liège races. This news is particularly disheartening for Jorgenson, who had strategically bypassed the cobbled Classics circuit to dedicate his training to the Ardennes events, aiming to peak for these specific challenges.

Frans Maassen, the sports director for Visma-Lease a Bike, expressed profound disappointment regarding the turn of events. He highlighted the team's thorough preparation and Jorgenson's exceptional form leading into the race. Maassen noted that the team had maintained excellent positioning throughout the race, with riders successfully keeping Jorgenson at the front. Their strategy involved being among the first to conquer key climbs like the Gulperberg and Kruisberg, where Jorgenson appeared robust and ready to contend, only for the crash to occur shortly thereafter.

The race ultimately saw Remco Evenepoel claim victory at the Amstel Gold Race. While Vauquelin managed to recover from his fall and continue, Jorgenson remained incapacitated, marking a premature end to his campaign in this critical part of the cycling calendar.

Despite the unfortunate conclusion to his Amstel Gold Race, Jorgenson's team had meticulously prepared for his participation in the Ardennes Classics.
