Dangerholm Unveils Featherlight Scott Spark RC, Redefining Cross-Country Bike Engineering
A new benchmark in lightweight cross-country cycling has been established by Dangerholm, who has masterfully transformed a Scott Spark RC into an ultralight marvel, tipping the scales at an impressive 8.99 kilograms. This bespoke creation highlights the evolving trend towards lighter, more efficient XC bikes, building upon innovations seen in models like Specialized's Epic and Canyon's Lux.
Dangerholm's rendition of the Scott Spark RC goes beyond conventional upgrades, emphasizing both visual appeal and enhanced functionality. The frame itself, a Scott Spark RC, features a distinct horizontally mounted internal shock, a design choice aimed at lowering the bike's center of gravity and increasing stiffness for superior power transfer. In a quest for minimal mass, Dangerholm removed components like the Octopus Cable routing and integrated frame storage, and even stripped the paint to expose the raw, polished carbon fiber. The suspension system is particularly noteworthy, combining a standard RockShox SIDLuxe shock with an Intend 120mm Samurai XC fork, retrofitted with RockShox's Flight Attendant technology for automatic lockout. Further weight reduction is achieved through the extensive use of CeramicSpeed SLT bearings, known for their self-lubricating properties and extended durability, alongside Darimo's IX2AL stem, Extralite HyperGrips, and a WERT StW-M titanium crankset. The drivetrain ingeniously mixes components, including a SRAM XX SL power meter and a special edition SRAM 1987 cassette, complemented by a heavily modified SRAM GX T-Type derailleur featuring HOPP Carbon Parts for significant weight savings. The wheels are equally innovative, utilizing Duke Lucky Jack 31 SLS5 285 rims with textile spokes made from Vectran fiber, offering high tensile strength at a lighter weight, paired with Tufo XC11 TR SG and XC14 TR SG tires.
Despite its remarkable lightness, Dangerholm's creation slightly surpasses the lightest production Specialized Epic 9 by 0.49kg. However, its unique engineering, custom modifications, and thoughtful integration of advanced components position it as a truly exceptional and arguably more captivating machine in the realm of high-performance cross-country cycling. This bike embodies the spirit of innovation and the relentless pursuit of perfection in sports engineering.
The engineering prowess demonstrated in this custom build serves as an inspiring example of how dedication to innovation can elevate performance and push the boundaries of what is possible. It underscores a philosophy that through meticulous attention to detail and a willingness to challenge existing norms, new heights can be reached, ultimately benefiting the entire cycling community by showcasing the potential for future advancements.
