Decorah, Iowa Unveils First Flow Trails at Carlson Park

Decorah, Iowa, renowned for its challenging, hand-crafted mountain bike trails, is embracing a new era of cycling with the development of contemporary flow trails at Carlson Park. This ambitious project, spearheaded by Pine Creek Trail Builders and supported by Decorah Human Powered Trails (DHPT), aims to diversify the region's offerings, making mountain biking more accessible to beginners while still providing an enjoyable experience for advanced riders. Brian Fuhrmann, Project Manager for Pine Creek, highlights the park's potential as a "blank slate" for introducing innovative trail-building techniques. The 110-acre Carlson Park, generously donated by a long-standing local family, is poised to become a significant regional hub for outdoor enthusiasts.

The current trail system in Decorah, characterized by its tight and rocky singletrack, has historically posed a significant challenge for less experienced riders and youth. The Carlson Park development directly addresses this gap by creating 5.5 miles of new beginner and intermediate-friendly singletrack, in addition to a 2.5-mile core trail. This expansion includes a "Northwest feature zone" with gravity lines, complete with rollers, tabletop jumps, and unique wooden features like a "hammock jump." Although the park has a modest 115 feet of vertical drop, these features are strategically designed to maintain momentum and enhance the riding experience. A distinctive "Rotary Binzebo," a grain bin gazebo visible from Highway 9, serves as an iconic trailhead shelter, blending traditional Iowa aesthetics with modern recreational infrastructure.

The financial backing for the Carlson Park project, totaling $480,000, demonstrates strong community and governmental support. Local citizens contributed $150,000, an RTP grant secured $293,000, and additional funds came from a private family donation and local tourism taxes. Notably, DHPT exceeded its fundraising goals, a testament to the community's enthusiasm for the initiative. While the initial construction phases are nearing completion, there remains potential for further expansion, including an additional 1.5 miles of black-diamond trails. The visibility and high usage of the new flow trails are crucial for securing future investment and access, ensuring that mountain biking continues to thrive and evolve in Decorah.
