This scrutiny followed complaints from several Women's WorldTour teams, alleging that some riders exhibited increased chest volume during time trials compared to road stages. The suspicion was that athletes might be using padding, ice, or other materials beneath their skinsuits to create an aerodynamic "chest fairing," potentially gaining an unfair advantage.

UCI regulations, specifically Article 1.3.032, explicitly state that clothing and accessories must not alter a rider's natural body shape and prohibit non-essential items placed under or integrated into apparel. The UCI's technical guidelines further ban products or substances applied to the body or clothing for aerodynamic enhancement. However, these documents lack specific guidelines on the permissible amount of padding in sports bras or detailed protocols for their examination, leading to considerable debate regarding the invasiveness of checks, the design of bras, and the actual aerodynamic impact of such items.

While earlier studies on chest fairings indicated significant drag reductions of up to 3.6 percent, recent computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling conducted by AiRO suggests that the marginal gains from sports-bra-sized modifications are likely insignificant. This new research implies that a padded bra is more apt to elevate expectations rather than actual speed. AiRO's findings, based on testing a digital female rider across various chest volumes and helmet types, concluded that minor changes in chest volume, such as those provided by a sports bra, do not yield a measurable aerodynamic benefit. This contrasts with larger, purpose-built fairings, which, in some instances, demonstrated more notable drag reductions, though still within a margin of uncertainty. Therefore, for most cyclists, focusing on optimal bike fit and riding position remains a more reliable and legitimate path to performance enhancement than relying on chest padding for speed gains.

The collective understanding from both the initial peer-reviewed study by Blocken, Malizia, and van Druenen, and AiRO's subsequent analysis, indicates that substantial, custom-designed fairings can indeed lessen aerodynamic drag. However, it is equally clear that minimal adjustments in chest volume, such as those provided by a standard padded sports bra, do not offer a consistent or quantifiable advantage. The scientific community emphasizes that achieving true aerodynamic benefits requires precise testing and shaping, far beyond what simple padding can offer. Thus, cyclists are encouraged to prioritize proven methods for improving efficiency, like refining their riding posture and ensuring a proper bike fit, which are both ethical and effective ways to gain speed without resorting to unverified or potentially disallowed modifications.
