Drunk Mayor Convicted After Hitting Cyclist

A recent incident saw a local mayor from Clun, Shropshire, found guilty of driving under the influence after his vehicle struck a cyclist. The official, identified as Ryan Davies, was discovered to have an alcohol level significantly exceeding the legal limit following the collision. This transgression has led to a substantial driving prohibition and a considerable financial penalty.

The victim, cyclist Cain Western, was commuting home from work at the time of the accident. Evidence presented in court indicated that Mr. Western was taking appropriate safety measures, including wearing reflective attire and having illuminated bicycle components. Despite these precautions, he was impacted from behind by Mr. Davies's car, resulting in him being dislodged from his bicycle. A breathalyser test conducted by police confirmed that his blood alcohol concentration was over double the legal threshold in the UK, registering 183 milligrams per 100ml of blood, compared to the legal limit of 80mg.

During his defense, Mr. Davies, who serves as both an agricultural legislator and the mayor of Clun, highlighted his professional and civic responsibilities, arguing for the critical importance of his driving license for both roles and his extensive community work. He conceded that he would not have driven had he accurately assessed his sobriety. Despite his defense, the court imposed a 20-month disqualification from driving and mandated payments totaling £3,017 in fines and court expenses. Public records indicate that Mr. Davies retains his mayoral position and continues his duties as chairman of the Clun Town Council, having even represented the village at high-profile events earlier in the year.
