Their initial objective was to pursue walleyes, having already secured a few earlier that morning. LeGrand's fish finder soon detected a promising echo deep below the surface. He promptly deployed a pink custom-designed 'Element' plug, hoping to entice the marked fish. However, before his intended target could react, an unexpectedly powerful strike indicated the presence of a much larger, more aggressive predator. It was clear from the initial powerful tug that a formidable northern pike had taken the bait.

A Test of Skill and Patience: Bringing in the Giant

Recognizing the immense strength of his opponent, LeGrand, who was only using an 8-pound test line without the added security of a heavier leader, understood the necessity of a cautious and deliberate approach. The 68-year-old Manitoba native meticulously played the fish, which made two powerful runs that nearly depleted his spool. He slowly and carefully maneuvered the pike towards the ice hole he was using, showcasing years of angling expertise. It measured a remarkable 45 inches in length, with an estimated weight of at least 20 pounds, potentially reaching an age of 25 years.
