Fairview Community Forest Unveils New Mountain Bike Trails and Educational Programs

A rural community just outside Asheville, North Carolina, has recently celebrated the grand opening of three miles of brand-new, bike-friendly trails within the Fairview Community Forest. This marks merely the initial stage of a larger endeavor that promises an additional eight miles of trails in the future. Beyond providing recreational spaces, these trails are designed to foster educational growth, offering middle and high school students hands-on experience in trail construction and outdoor industry careers through the innovative WORX Project. This initiative stands as a testament to the power of community collaboration and a forward-thinking approach to youth engagement.

Fairview, historically an agricultural hub, is transforming its natural landscape into a dynamic learning and recreational area. The forest, once a youth camp, is now managed by Camp Grier in partnership with Conserving Carolina, a land trust dedicated to preservation. The $1.2 million acquisition, supported by various grants and donations, secured the forest's future for public use and educational programs. The WORX Project, launched in 2023, empowers young individuals by introducing them to valuable skills in outdoor recreation, environmental education, and sustainable agriculture, with plans to expand its facilities to include specialized workshops and culinary training.

The initial phase of the trail system, which opened in March 2026, holds a special significance as it was one of the last projects overseen by the late trail-building pioneer, Ed Sutton. Named 'Sutton's Way' and 'Cove Forest Loop,' these trails span three miles of open woodlands, offering wide, flowy paths with berms and rollers suitable for beginner to intermediate riders. These trails are not only accessible to cyclists but also to pedestrians and are designed to be adaptive-friendly, ensuring a broad spectrum of visitors can enjoy the natural beauty. The upcoming second phase, backed by a significant grant from Buncombe County, will further expand the trail network and introduce essential amenities like bathroom facilities, with completion anticipated by 2027.
