Free Live Coverage of Tour de France in UK

Cycling enthusiasts in the United Kingdom will be delighted to learn that several stages of the highly anticipated Tour de France will be accessible for free via the Welsh-language broadcaster S4C. This development offers a crucial opportunity for fans to follow significant portions of the race without a paid subscription, particularly after changes in broadcast rights that moved comprehensive live English coverage to a paid platform.

S4C, through its various platforms including BBC iPlayer, S4C Clic, and S4C Chwaraeon’s YouTube channel, is set to broadcast stages 1, 2, 3, 19, 20, and 21 live. Notably, stage 18 will also be available on S4C Clic and BBC iPlayer. This encompasses the crucial opening phases, known as the Grand Départ, originating in Catalonia, as well as the climactic final stages on Alpe d'Huez and the ceremonial finish in Paris. While the commentary will be in Welsh, this provision ensures that a substantial portion of the iconic cycling event remains freely available to British viewers.

The broadcasting landscape for the Tour de France in the UK has undergone significant changes. For the first time in decades, the entire race will not be available live and free-to-air in English. This shift follows a decision in 2025 where ITV, a long-standing broadcaster of the event, ceased its coverage after Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) acquired exclusive UK rights. WBD, the parent company of TNT Sports, now holds these exclusive rights, meaning English live broadcasts are primarily found on TNT Sports and HBO Max, which require a monthly subscription fee.

In response to these changes, terrestrial channel 5 (formerly Channel 5) has stepped in to provide free-to-air highlights. They have secured a deal extending until 2028 to show daily summaries of the Tour de France, along with highlights from the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España, presented by Rebecca Charlton. These daily highlights will be broadcast every evening at 7 pm, starting on Saturday, July 4th, from Barcelona.

Looking ahead, the UK is preparing to host the Grand Départ of the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift in 2027. Channel 5 has confirmed it will broadcast live coverage of these British starts. Furthermore, S4C is actively engaged in discussions to cover the 2027 Tour de France stages that will traverse through Wales, marking a historic moment for Welsh cycling.

The presenting team for this year’s S4C coverage includes Rhodri Gomer, Peredur ap Gwynedd (renowned guitarist from Pendulum), Gruff Lewis, and Manon Lloyd. Peredur ap Gwynedd expressed his excitement, noting S4C’s 13th consecutive year of broadcasting the Tour, and eagerly anticipating the future, especially with a Tour stage scheduled to pass through Wales next year.
