From that day on, my ultimate aspiration has been to race for Visma and, ideally, compete in the Tour de France with them.” Xander Graham reflects on a remarkable day six years ago. During stage seven of the 2021 Tour of Britain, then-12-year-old Xander rode alongside a breakaway group near his hometown of Edinburgh. His impressive pace was rewarded when Eenkhoorn, at the time riding for Jumbo-Visma, handed him a water bottle. This heartwarming moment quickly gained widespread attention online, and now, the narrative has come full circle in an almost poetic fashion.

The Bidon and the Beginning: A Tangible Dream

Now 17, Graham still treasures that water bottle, knowing precisely where it resides: “on a shelf in my garage.” However, as of this week, he possesses something far more significant, an opportunity that places him within reach of the dream he has nurtured for the past five years: a professional contract. He has officially joined JEGG-SKIL-DJR, a Dutch cycling team directly linked to the esteemed Visma-Lease a Bike organization.

Years of Dedication: Paving the Way to Success

“I was already a devoted follower of Visma back then,” he shares with Cycling Weekly. “But that particular day deepened my admiration for them, solidifying their place as my favorite team. So, truly, this feels like a dream realized.” This achievement, however, is not a sudden occurrence. Over the past five years, Graham has diligently worked to transform his aspiration into reality. He has been a vital member of the Yorkshire-based Prologue Cycling Team and is currently midway through a two-year program with the Manchester Cycling Academy.

“I am also a proud beneficiary of the Braveheart program in Scotland,” he explains. “This fund provides crucial financial support for transportation and other expenses, enabling riders like me to travel to Europe for races, which is an enormous help.” As noted by commentators Ned Boulting and Adam Blythe during the original incident, who hailed it as the Tour's highlight, the young Scot displayed remarkable speed even in his pre-teen years.

Multidisciplinary Background to Focused Road Racing: A Strategic Shift

“I’ve been riding bikes since I was four years old,” Xander recounts. “I started with local mountain-bike dirt races, then moved on to cyclocross and some road cycling. From under-14 to under-16, I competed in every discipline—mountain biking, cyclocross, road, and track. However, for the past year, I’ve dedicated my focus entirely to road racing.” This strategic shift has yielded impressive results. Earlier this spring, he learned about a young talent day hosted by JEGG for under-19 riders.

Seizing the Opportunity: From Testing to Team Contract

“Many individuals applied, but I managed to get through,” Xander details. “Next, we had to undergo testing in Belgium. About two or three weeks later, I received a message from the head of JEGG, inviting me to a training camp in Germany. Following that, he informed me that there was an available spot on the team.”

Balancing Home Base with European Competition: The Next Chapter

“I’ll continue to be based at home in Edinburgh, but I’ll be traveling to races and training camps in Europe. I have a training camp scheduled with them later this year, which will be my first opportunity to meet the team in person.”
