While mountain and gravel bikes are increasingly adopting this larger diameter for its superior ability to navigate challenging terrains, the question of its applicability to road cycling remains a hot topic. This exploration delves into the discussions among custom bike builders and industry experts regarding the feasibility, challenges, and potential future of 32-inch wheels on asphalt.

The Ascent of 32-inch Wheels: From Dirt Trails to Pavement?

At the recent MADE Bike Show in Portland, the prevalence of 32-inch wheels on various off-road bicycles was undeniable. From dedicated mountain bikes to robust bikepacking setups and a growing array of gravel bikes, this emerging standard showcased its versatility with custom forks, deep carbon rims, and even new tire options. What began as a series of prototypes earlier in the season is now evolving into a cohesive ecosystem of components. However, conspicuously absent were road bikes designed for this wheel size.

The primary appeal of 32-inch wheels lies in their enhanced ability to roll smoothly over uneven surfaces and maintain momentum, especially on straight paths. Their larger radius allows them to encounter obstacles at a less acute angle, thereby mitigating speed loss from impacts. While their increased rotational inertia demands more initial effort to accelerate, it subsequently helps preserve speed. These advantages are inherently suited to off-road conditions, prompting speculation about their utility on paved roads, particularly for disciplines focused on sustained speed, such as triathlon.

UCI Regulations: A Roadblock for Traditional Racing

For competitive road cycling, the international governing body, UCI, imposes strict rules that currently preclude the use of 32-inch wheels. Article 1.3.018 limits the overall diameter of a bicycle wheel, including the tire, to 700mm. With a 32-inch wheel featuring a 686mm bead-seat diameter, the combined thickness of two usable tires would invariably exceed this limit. Consequently, 32-inch wheels are incompatible with UCI-sanctioned road races unless a significant rule revision occurs. This regulatory barrier also extends to the approval process for road, track, and cyclocross components, which would require substantial changes to accommodate a new wheel standard.

The Conundrum of Fit and Geometry

Beyond regulatory constraints, a major hurdle for the widespread adoption of 32-inch wheels in road cycling is the challenge of achieving appropriate bicycle geometry across diverse rider sizes. Larger wheels inherently lead to higher front ends and longer wheelbases, which can result in toe overlap, especially problematic for shorter riders. Custom builders acknowledge this limitation, noting that frames designed for 32-inch wheels inevitably feature extended wheelbases.

Aaron Barcheck of Mosaic Cycles recounted the difficulty of sourcing a suitable fork for his 32-inch gravel bike, leading him to develop his own with specific axle-to-crown measurements and offsets to manage front-end height and toe clearance. However, this bespoke fork is optimized for 2.2-inch tires; a road version with narrower 30mm tires would necessitate entirely new fork designs tailored to different lengths and offsets, potentially requiring modifications to chainstay configurations.

A Scarcity of Road-Specific Components

Currently, the component market for 32-inch wheels heavily favors off-road applications. Road-specific forks are non-existent, narrow tires are unavailable, and existing 32-inch carbon rims are typically designed with wider internal widths for robust off-road tires. Builders keen on experimenting with road versions require dedicated road tires and rims before meaningful testing can commence. The consensus among manufacturers is that a 32-inch road project would need bespoke rims and tires to truly assess its potential.

The Pavement Performance Debate

The core question remains: would larger wheels genuinely enhance speed on smooth asphalt? While the benefits on rough terrain are evident—reducing the impact of rocks and potholes—these advantages largely diminish on paved surfaces. The hypothesis that 32-inch wheels could offer superior rolling resistance and speed retention on roads is tempered by the added material, increased aerodynamic drag, and greater rotational inertia they entail.

Barcheck highlights that a lightweight 700c road wheel with a low moment of inertia remains hard to surpass, particularly on climbs. He suggests that the performance benefits of 32-inch wheels might be highly route-dependent, similar to how a 32-inch gravel bike excels on the long, fast sections of Unbound Gravel but may be less advantageous on the steep ascents of Crusher in the Tushar. Stinner’s experience indicates that while larger wheels can roll over obstacles more easily on fire-road climbs, they don't necessarily translate to faster uphill performance on smooth surfaces. Moreover, the elongated wheelbase necessitates a re-learning of handling for tight turns and technical descents.

This suggests that if a 32-inch road bike ever materializes, it would likely be a highly specialized machine, best suited for flat or gently undulating courses, where sustained speed and minimal acceleration changes are paramount. This brings the discussion full circle to triathlon.

Triathlon: The Unregulated Testing Ground

The triathlon discipline, especially long-course racing, offers a unique environment for the development of 32-inch road bikes. Triathlon bikes are already known for their unconventional designs, and long-course races often mimic gravel events in that riders spend extended periods alone, maintaining a mostly straight trajectory. In this context, toe overlap is less critical, and an extended wheelbase can be an asset for stability rather than a hindrance.

IRONMAN rules are far more flexible than the UCI’s, with no explicit maximum wheel diameter specified. They even permit different wheel diameters for front and rear wheels, subject to event director approval for safety. While “non-traditional or unusual” equipment still requires pre-race approval from the head referee, the wheel diameter itself is not an automatic disqualifier. The main concern would be the impact of larger, deeper front wheels on handling in crosswinds, potentially making the bike harder to control.

Stinner is actively awaiting prototypes for deeper 32-inch rims, aiming to reduce spoke length for increased wheel stiffness. He anticipates these developments will offer intriguing possibilities for speed but remains curious about their performance in side winds, noting that current deep-section and disc wheels already act as “huge sails,” and scaling up the front wheel would only amplify handling challenges.

The Future Trajectory: Gravel First, Road Later

Historically, bicycle technology has often flowed from road cycling, evolving into all-road and then gravel. However, the 32-inch wheel trend appears to be reversing this pattern. Originating in mountain biking, it is finding new applications in gravel, with custom builders leveraging their freedom to address geometry issues one rider at a time. All-road cycling might be the next logical step, with triathlon potentially serving as the initial road-oriented experimental ground. The UCI professional peloton, if at all, would be the last to adopt this innovation.

At the MADE show, while builders couldn't definitively declare 32-inch wheels faster, they almost universally described the ride experience as feeling fast enough to pique their curiosity. Stinner likened his first ride on a 32-inch wheel bike to the sensation of an e-bike, noting, “You get on the 32, and you’re like, ‘Whoa, this thing wants to go.’” Barcheck views all-road as a plausible next build, and Hall expressed profound enthusiasm for the new diameter, stating, “I love it. I absolutely love it. I pretty much quit riding 29ers at this point.”

So, is road cycling next for 32-inch wheels? Not in the immediate future. The industry requires more dedicated components, geometries that cater to a broader range of riders beyond just the tallest, and, most importantly, a demonstrated demand from the market to truly drive this innovation forward on paved surfaces.
