Halfords' Cycling Division Boosts Company Momentum with Over 6% Sales Jump

Apr 30, 2026, 5:49 PM

Halfords, a prominent cycling retailer in the UK, has witnessed its most substantial sales growth in the cycling sector this year. This positive development suggests a gradual resurgence within the British bicycle industry, following a prolonged period of instability after the COVID-19 pandemic. The company's latest financial update indicates a robust performance, reinforcing its pivotal role as an indicator for the overall health of the UK's cycling market.

For several years, Halfords' financial reports often highlighted declining bicycle sales and a challenging economic landscape. For instance, in 2024, the company expressed concerns about the cycling market being "significantly worse than expected." However, in the past two years, there has been a noticeable shift towards a more favorable outlook for the retailer and its cycling operations. This improved performance is particularly noteworthy given the prevailing global economic uncertainties, including ongoing international conflicts.

The recent trading update, released in anticipation of the full financial results for the year ending April 2026, reveals a 6.4 percent like-for-like increase in cycling sales compared to the previous fiscal year. This impressive growth surpasses the 2.9 percent increase in motoring sales and the 4.8 percent overall business growth. Consequently, Halfords anticipates its pre-tax profits will be at the higher end of expectations, potentially reaching between £36 million and £41.2 million. The company attributes this success to enhanced gross margins and effective cost management.

Despite the volatile macroeconomic conditions, including the conflict in the Middle East, Halfords confirms that trading in March and April remained consistent with its projections. The company has also strategically hedged its energy costs and foreign exchange requirements, with freight rates largely secured in advance. This proactive approach provides stability and mitigates short-term market fluctuations. Looking ahead to 2027, Halfords maintains an optimistic forecast, predicting pre-tax profits between £42 million and £48.1 million.

Henry Birch, Halfords' chief executive, expressed satisfaction with the positive outcomes stemming from the 'optimise' phase of their 'Fit for the Future' strategy. He emphasized the focus on operational excellence and strengthening the company's foundations for sustained growth. Birch highlighted the significant potential within Halfords and looked forward to sharing further details at the full-year results announcement in June. He also extended gratitude to the 12,500 dedicated experts across stores and garages, acknowledging their crucial role in achieving this performance and ensuring Halfords remains the leading choice for motoring and cycling services, providing invaluable advice and support to customers.

Despite the continuous positive trend in cycling sales, Halfords is adopting a cautious stance within its bicycle division. As a strategic move, the retail giant decided to freeze bike prices for 2026, a decision implemented in February. This measure ensures that popular models, such as the entry-level Carrera Vanquish and the Boardman SLR 9.0 Carbon, maintain their current pricing. Additionally, Halfords recently offered significant discounts on selected Boardman bikes, including the Boardman SLR 9.6 Disc road bike, which was temporarily available at a substantially reduced price of £1,750, leading to a rapid sell-out. This reflects a dynamic strategy balancing growth with market sensitivity.
