Hiker Rescued After Week-Long Ordeal on Remote Peak

An experienced outdoorsman from Missouri was recently brought to safety following a harrowing incident on Wyoming's isolated Gannett Peak. Shaun Mackelprang, who was in the process of scaling the highest points in each of the 50 states, became disoriented after encountering severe weather conditions. Despite the challenging circumstances, he was discovered alive, albeit dehydrated and confused, nearly a week after he began his ascent.

Mackelprang embarked on his journey to Gannett Peak (13,804 feet) from the Green River Lakes Trailhead. His prolonged absence, coupled with reports of harsh storms in the area, prompted a massive search and rescue operation. The Sublette County Sheriff's Office led the coordinated effort, deploying drone technology, helicopter support from Tip Top Search and Rescue, and dedicated ground teams across the vast, rugged terrain. Ultimately, Mackelprang was located near Scott Lake, several miles from Gannett Peak and his initial base camp, marking a successful conclusion to the intense search.

Reflecting on the experience from the hospital, Mackelprang expressed profound gratitude to his rescuers. Lieutenant Travis Bingham of the Sublette County Drone Team emphasized the unpredictability of mountain conditions, even for seasoned hikers, and recommended carrying satellite communication devices like Garmin or SPOT for emergencies. Mackelprang, undeterred by the ordeal, plans to continue his quest to conquer all 50 state high points, with Gannett Peak now marking his 45th achievement.
