Hikers Embrace 'Pack It Out' Initiative for Mountain Waste Management

A recent study indicates a significant shift in hiker behavior regarding human waste disposal on trails. The research, conducted at Colorado's Mt. Elbert, suggests that a majority of hikers are willing to participate in a 'pack it out' program, even if it involves a cost. This finding offers a promising outlook for environmental conservation efforts in popular outdoor areas.

The study, funded by PACT Outdoors, a manufacturer of outdoor sanitation kits, involved setting up free human waste disposal bag kiosks at a popular trailhead. Over 19 days, 410 hikers were surveyed, and an overwhelming 92% of those who used a disposal bag obtained it from the PACT kiosk. This demonstrates that accessibility plays a crucial role in encouraging responsible waste practices. Furthermore, a substantial majority expressed their intent to use similar bags again, especially if they were readily available at other trailheads, and notably, even if they had to purchase them.

Addressing the ecological challenges posed by heavy trail usage is paramount. At Mt. Elbert, which attracts between 15,000 and 20,000 hikers annually, improper human waste disposal can severely impact the delicate alpine ecosystem. The study, part of a doctoral dissertation by Pennsylvania State University researcher Jack Edelson, underscores that despite existing facilities, a significant portion of waste occurs on the mountain itself. Traditional methods like digging catholes are often ineffective above the treeline, leading to environmental degradation and potential health risks. The study's results suggest that providing convenient and accessible disposal solutions can significantly reduce these negative impacts, transforming hiker behavior and fostering a more sustainable approach to outdoor recreation.
