A Homage to Craftsmanship: The Cliff Shrubb Winter Training Bicycle

This captivating narrative centers on a custom-crafted winter training bicycle, a testament to the artistry of master frame builder Cliff Shrubb, created for his friend, Chris Law. Their camaraderie, forged during rides with the 'Over The Hill Gang' in Surrey, led to a unique opportunity. Following an unfortunate cycling incident where Chris's previous bike was damaged, Cliff extended an offer to build him a new frame. Chris, recognizing the rare chance to own a bespoke piece from such a celebrated craftsman, eagerly accepted.

The construction of this bicycle reveals Cliff Shrubb's meticulous attention to detail and generosity. Initially, Chris requested Nervex Pro dropouts and Reynolds tubing. While Nervex Pro was no longer readily available, Cliff, in a touching gesture, used his last remaining set of these coveted dropouts, originally saved for his personal project, for Chris's bike. For the tubing, Cliff opted for Columbus SL (Super Leggera), believing it was a superior choice for the build, a decision Chris later agreed with wholeheartedly. The frameset was then expertly chromed and painted in a striking candy apple red with white banding and chrome lugwork by Atlantic Boulevard in Bury, achieving a timeless yet contemporary aesthetic. The bicycle is equipped with a Campagnolo 10-speed Centaur groupset, featuring Athena brake calipers and a compact 50/34 crankset paired with a 13-28 cassette, ideal for the demanding Surrey hills. The wheels, Ambrosio Rims laced to Campagnolo hubs, were skillfully built by Harry Rowland in Kent.

More than a decade after Cliff Shrubb's passing, this bicycle remains a cherished and regularly used possession for Chris. It serves not only as a functional winter training bike, complete with mudguards for practical use, but also as a profound and tangible remembrance of his friend. Chris's fond recollections of Cliff as a "lovely chap" are echoed in an obituary by Richard Hallett, underscoring the deep respect and admiration for the frame builder's character and craft.
