Huntsville, Ontario: A Mountain Biking Transformation

Huntsville, Ontario, a town of just over 20,000 residents, has historically been a hub for outdoor recreation, yet it lacked dedicated mountain bike trails. This deficiency prompted a group of enthusiastic riders, led by Buck Miller and Graham Henderson, to establish the Huntsville Mountain Bike Association (HMBA) in 2018. Their goal was to transform the area into a mountain biking haven, beginning with the construction of 20 kilometers of trails that are now actively used by over 400 members. This journey began with an initial set of trails at Echo Valley, though these were unfortunately destroyed by a tornado in 2020, prompting HMBA to seek new locations.

Undaunted by setbacks, HMBA forged a pivotal three-way agreement in 2020 with the city of Huntsville and the Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area. This partnership allowed HMBA to develop and maintain trails on the ski hill's extensive 130-acre property, with the city providing crucial liability insurance and leasing the land during the off-season. The success at Hidden Valley quickly attracted the attention of other landowners, including Deerhurst Resort and a private individual, who both invited HMBA to build trails on their properties. This expansion led to the creation of varied trail systems, from conservative designs at Hidden Valley to more technical, enduro-style trails at Deerhurst, and family-friendly routes like Lance’s Loops near downtown.

As HMBA's influence grew, so did its financial resources, enabling the club to transition from relying solely on volunteer labor to hiring professional trail builders by 2022. Adam Billinghurst, an experienced builder from the region, joined the team and began enhancing existing trails and creating new ones, focusing on smoother, flow-style paths at Hidden Valley and improving beginner accessibility. HMBA's commitment has elevated Huntsville to host major events like the Canadian Enduro Series and the Greystone Gravel Grinder, which not only showcase the region's diverse trails but also generate significant income for future trail development and infrastructure, including plans for a pump track, solidifying Huntsville's reputation as a burgeoning mountain biking destination.
