IMBA Opens Applications for 2027 Trail Accelerator Grants, Fostering Mountain Biking Development
The International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) has initiated the application period for its 2027 Trail Accelerator Grant (TAG) program. Eligible entities, including local, municipal, state, and federal government bodies, certified 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations managing parks and trails, mountain bike clubs, and IMBA Local Membership Organizations, are encouraged to apply. The application window opened on November 1st and will close at the end of the year, providing a vital opportunity for groups dedicated to advancing mountain biking infrastructure. A key criterion for selection emphasizes robust collaboration among local leaders, government bodies, land managers, community stakeholders, and various cycling or trail associations. Additionally, all proposed projects must be concluded by the close of the 2027 calendar year, with grant recipients responsible for securing matching funds.
The TAG program offers two distinct funding avenues: Planning & Design, and Education. Awardees in the Planning & Design category can utilize funds for a range of activities, including the creation of conceptual plans for trail networks, detailed design and field flagging of trail alignments, assessments of existing trail systems, comprehensive community feasibility studies, or the planning and design of urban bike parks. The financial support for Planning & Design typically ranges from $10,000 to $30,000. For Education awardees, options include IMBA Trail Care Workshops designed for volunteers and land management personnel, Fundraising Education Services to guide capital campaigns, or Strategic Planning assistance for grassroots mountain bike and trail organization leaders. Education grants generally range from $3,000 to $10,800. Since its inception in 2018, the Trail Accelerator Grant has significantly impacted IMBA partners, empowering trail associations through 76 grants and unlocking over $13 million in additional funding for local trail projects, as highlighted by David Wiens, IMBA's VP of State Partnerships.
Over the years, IMBA's TAG has played a pivotal role in establishing and enhancing numerous trail systems nationwide, transforming diverse landscapes into thriving mountain biking destinations. For instance, in Waynesboro, Virginia, the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) successfully converted a former landfill into a community mountain biking trail system, largely due to TAG's financial assistance and expert guidance. Similarly, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, years of advocacy for trails in the Great Bear Ski Valley gained significant momentum following a land agreement in 2021 and a subsequent TAG award in 2022. A notable success story comes from Ely, Nevada, where an initial $10,000 grant catalyzed plans for the Garnet Hill/Murry Peak trail system, leading to a much larger $10 million grant from the Southern Nevada Land Management Act of 1998, which will fund extensive upgrades including new campgrounds, improved roads, and 20 miles of additional singletrack. All pertinent information and application forms for the 2027 Trail Accelerator grant are accessible on the IMBA website, with the application deadline set for December 31, 2026. Recipients will be announced in the second quarter of 2027.
These grant initiatives underscore a collective commitment to fostering outdoor recreational opportunities and community well-being. By investing in the development of accessible and well-maintained trail systems, we not only promote physical activity and connection with nature but also cultivate vibrant communities. The expansion of such programs signifies a forward-looking vision where collaborative efforts and strategic funding create lasting positive impacts, encouraging future generations to embrace healthy lifestyles and environmental stewardship.
