Innovative Full-Suspension Mountain Bikes Unveiled at MADE 2026 in Portland

Aug 22, 2026, 5:40 PM
The MADE exhibition in Portland, Oregon, brought together numerous independent frame manufacturers, each presenting their latest and most impressive full-suspension mountain bicycles. While the event featured many unconventional designs, a core focus remained on full-suspension models with traditional wheel dimensions, crafted from a variety of materials.

Innovation on Two Wheels: A Glimpse into the Future of Full-Suspension Mountain Biking

Significant Other: Redefining Downcountry and Trail Riding

Ashley King, the visionary behind Significant Other, a Denver-based brand, captivated attendees with her distinctive approach to mountain bike design. Among her offerings, the Ded Reckin, a “Downcountry” model, stood out. This bike boasts 130mm front travel and 120mm rear travel, featuring a robust titanium front triangle and a resilient steel rear triangle. Its linkage-driven single-pivot system showcases a blend of durability and performance.

Expanding the Lineup: The Doom Scroll Prophecy Series

Significant Other's range extends to the Doom Scroll Prophecy Trail and Super Trail models, both sharing identical front and rear triangles but distinguished by shock size and lower shock mounts, as explained by designer Steve Ziegler. The Trail version, a full 29er, offers 160mm front and 145mm rear travel. The Super Trail steps up with 170mm travel both front and rear, employing a mixed-wheel configuration. The brand is also exploring options for a 29-inch or 'mullet' setup for the Trail version, catering to rider preferences and diverse terrains.

The Steez Machine: A Compact Powerhouse for Young Riders

A particularly challenging yet innovative creation was the Steez Machine, a 24-inch children's bike featuring an impressive 150mm of front and rear travel. King and Ziegler highlighted the complexity of integrating such significant suspension into a smaller frame, demonstrating their commitment to high-performance design across all rider segments.

From Apprenticeship to Entrepreneurship: Ashley King's Journey

Ashley King's foray into bike manufacturing began in 2020 at Reeb, where she honed her skills in small-batch fabrication, particularly with steel. Her journey continued with a titanium brand before she ventured out to establish Significant Other. Her debut at MADE last year with the Ded Reckin garnered widespread interest, leading to its limited production availability. The Ded Reckin is offered as a frame-only, frame/shock, or frame/shock/fork package, featuring a 65-degree head tube angle, a 76-degree seat tube, and comes in six sizes.

Diversity in Materials: Beyond Titanium

The MADE show was a testament to the diverse material palette used in full-suspension bike construction. Wolfhound Cycles, known for gravel and hardtail bikes, displayed a unique steel single-pivot full-suspension model. This bike, featuring a Madrone derailleur and an innovative headset as its sole pivot point, highlighted steel's versatility in performance biking.

Hybrid Designs and Advanced Machining Techniques

Montenegro MFG (MMFG) presented a steel and carbon fiber enduro bike, showcasing a hybrid design that leverages the strengths of both materials. The bike, despite its substantial suspension, reportedly weighs just over 36 pounds, a feat attributed to MMFG's expertise in carbon construction. Portland-based Paladin Bikes unveiled its AM1, an aluminum model offering adjustable travel. Paladin's patent-pending “multi-axis CNC” process allows for precise machining, creating frames with hollowed sections and integrated cable routing, distinguishing their approach from traditional bonding methods.

3D Printing and Flex-Stay Innovations

Sage, a brand synonymous with titanium, showcased its Project FAF and Harbinger models, both featuring 3D-printed titanium at frame junctions. These bikes utilize a flex-stay single-pivot suspension platform, offering subtle yet significant performance differences between the two designs. The exhibition also featured a striking pink Sour bike, demonstrating that innovation and unique aesthetics can be found across all segments, regardless of wheel size trends.
