In a remarkable display of resilience and forward-thinking urban development, Joplin, Missouri, a community still bearing the scars of a catastrophic tornado, has inaugurated a state-of-the-art municipal bike park. This ambitious $6.8 million undertaking, known as MOmentum Bike Park, spans 95 acres and features a comprehensive network of trails and facilities designed to cater to cyclists of all ages and abilities. From winding hiking paths to challenging mountain bike routes, a cutting-edge pump track, and specialized skill-building areas, the park embodies a transformative vision for the city, aiming to enrich residents' lives, draw in tourists, and redefine Joplin's public image.

The Rebirth of Joplin: From Disaster to Dynamic Recreational Hub

In 2011, Joplin, Missouri, faced an unimaginable tragedy when an EF-5 tornado ripped through the city, leaving widespread destruction and a profound human toll. This devastating event, one of the most costly and deadly in US history, prompted years of arduous recovery and rebuilding efforts. However, a new chapter has begun for Joplin with the unveiling of the MOmentum Bike Park, a project that emerged from the city's comprehensive Parks and Recreation master plan finalized in 2021.

This visionary initiative was born from the community's desire for improved health, economic vitality, and increased tourism. Local cycling enthusiasts, including Cole Beckham, Vice President of Design for American Ramp Company, passionately advocated for enhanced biking infrastructure. Their efforts were bolstered by students from area medical and dental schools, who saw the bike park as an incentive for retaining young professionals in the city. Recognizing the need to attract and retain residents after significant population loss, the city embraced the concept of a world-class cycling destination.

The nearly 95-acre site, once home to soccer fields and underutilized natural areas, was transformed into a cyclist's paradise. Funding for the substantial $6.8 million project was secured through a combination of the Parks and Stormwater Tax, the Hotel/Motel Tax, and a significant $1.5 million grant from the State Department of Economic Development Local Tourism ARPA. With funding in place, SWT Design was appointed as the primary designer, assembling a consortium of five specialized companies, including IMBA Trail Solutions, to bring the park to life.

Construction, led by Crossland Construction Company and American Ramp Company, was completed within an impressive eight-month timeframe in 2025. The park's varied topography played a crucial role in its design. The northern section, characterized by a downhill slope leading to Turkey Creek, became the perfect location for exhilarating downhill trails, including 'Concrete Roots,' ingeniously constructed using recycled debris from the 2011 tornado. The flatter southern area hosts a Velosolutions pump track, progressive jump lines, a skills course, and a children's bicycle playground, all easily accessible from the main parking lot and featuring amenities like a pavilion and restrooms. The western side, with its rocky terrain, was dedicated to technical trails, offering diverse challenges for riders.

Since its soft opening in November 2025, MOmentum Bike Park has rapidly gained popularity, attracting approximately 70,000 visitors from 27 states. The park's prominence is set to grow further as it prepares to host a qualifier for the 2026 Velosolutions UCI Pump Track World Championships from August 15-16. This event, alongside the park's proximity to Bentonville, a renowned cycling hub, positions Joplin as a burgeoning destination for cycling tourism. The Missouri Municipal League recognized the project's innovation by bestowing Joplin with a 2026 Innovation Award, solidifying the park's status as a symbol of renewal and a vibrant new identity for the community.

Joplin's journey from a city grappling with disaster to a beacon of recreational innovation is truly inspiring. The MOmentum Bike Park stands as a testament to the power of community vision, strategic planning, and unwavering determination. It not only provides an exceptional recreational outlet but also serves as a potent economic driver and a symbol of hope, demonstrating that even in the wake of immense hardship, a community can rise, rebuild, and create something extraordinary for its future generations.
