Leading Cycling Distributor Saddleback Enters Administration Amidst Partnership Changes

May 30, 2026, 2:24 PM

Saddleback Cycling, a key player in the United Kingdom's distribution of bicycles, components, and accessories, has ceased operations. Founded in 2004 by Andy and Sarah Wigmore, the company became a significant hub for numerous mid to high-end cycling brands, including Castelli, Silca, Sportful, Chris King, and Sidi. Its collaboration with Italy's Castelli over the past two decades notably contributed to the brand's widespread presence in the UK market.

The company had previously handled distribution for brands such as Felt Bicycles, Enve, Bont, 3T, and Cannondale. A significant partnership with Cannondale, a globally recognized US brand, was announced in early 2025, signaling a major expansion for Saddleback. This venture, anticipated to double the company's business within the year by focusing on Cannondale's historical sales figures, was viewed as a strategic move to enhance its value to the trade and overcome recent financial challenges, including £3.3 million in losses over two consecutive years. However, this ambitious plan faced early setbacks, with both Enve and Cannondale eventually ending their agreements with the British distributor.

The mutual decision in March 2026 to conclude the Cannondale distribution, followed by Enve's departure in February 2026, left Saddleback in a precarious position. The company's administrators were appointed, resulting in 42 employees being laid off, with some remaining temporarily to manage the wind-down process. This event underscores the volatile nature of the cycling industry, which has faced fluctuations post-COVID, with bike sales in the UK reaching their lowest levels since the 1970s at one point, despite recent signs of recovery.

This situation serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and inherent risks in business, particularly within dynamic markets. It highlights the importance of adaptability, sound strategic planning, and resilient partnerships. While challenges are inevitable, they also present opportunities for innovation and re-evaluation, encouraging us to seek new pathways for growth and stability. The spirit of enterprise, even in adversity, pushes individuals and industries forward, fostering a continuous cycle of learning and improvement.
