Montrose, CO Unveils Ambitious New Bike Park Project

Montrose, Colorado's vibrant mountain biking community is poised for a significant upgrade with the announcement of the Baldridge Park Bike Park. This innovative project, situated conveniently within the city limits, promises to introduce a network of gravity-focused trails, catering to diverse skill sets from novices to advanced riders. The initiative aims to resolve the long-standing challenge of limited accessible in-town trails, thereby fostering greater community engagement and solidifying Montrose's status as a premier destination for cycling enthusiasts.

The concept for the Baldridge Park Bike Park emerged from a recognized need to complement Montrose's existing, yet often remotely located, trail systems. Nick Jacobson, treasurer for COPMOBA and a driving force behind this endeavor, highlighted the importance of proximity. He noted that existing trails typically necessitate vehicle transport, a barrier the new park seeks to dismantle. By integrating purpose-built trails into Baldridge Regional Park, adjacent to the Uncompahgre River, the project ensures easy access for a majority of Montrose residents, whether by foot or bike.

Scheduled for development on a 15-to-20-acre section of the Hogback mesa's east-facing slope, the park will leverage approximately 100 feet of elevation change. The design envisions a comprehensive system featuring four to five gravity trails, meticulously crafted to offer a spectrum of difficulties. This includes a beginner-friendly skills loop at the mesa's summit, equipped with wooden and small dirt features, allowing new riders to hone their abilities. Descending the hillside, riders will encounter green trails for beginners, blue trails incorporating tabletops, and challenging black trails designed to attract experienced riders with larger wooden features, wall rides, and drops, positioning Montrose as a regional draw.

A critical component of the park's design is a fifth trail, conceived to bridge the gap between intermediate and advanced riding. Described as a 'tech-style' trail, it will prepare riders for the more demanding routes found in outlying areas like Electric Hills, which are less accommodating for beginners. Additionally, the plans encompass a dedicated climbing trail, several connector paths, a starting zone at the mesa's peak for added momentum, and viewing areas with shade structures for spectators and families to enjoy the scenic town views.

The collaborative design phase spanned five months, involving COPMOBA and Dirt Tek Trails, alongside active participation from the City of Montrose, the Montrose Recreation District, and local disc golf enthusiasts. This inclusive approach aimed to maximize community benefits while minimizing disruption to other park users. This project aligns seamlessly with the city's broader master plan for Baldridge Regional Park, which identified soft-surface trails as a key community priority three years prior.

The estimated cost for the bike park ranges from $300,000 to $350,000. While the City of Montrose has expressed interest in contributing, the majority of funding is expected to come from grants and community fundraising. COPMOBA plans to formally launch its fundraising efforts once the grant application process progresses. The ambitious goal is to break ground by 2027, although the timeline is contingent on securing the necessary financial support. The team is working diligently to meet this target, acknowledging the inherent uncertainties in funding and development schedules.
