Mt. Abram Bike Park: A Community-Driven Mountain Biking Destination

Apr 29, 2026, 8:46 PM

Mt. Abram, a modest ski area nestled in western Maine, has dramatically reshaped the landscape of mountain biking in the Northeast by prioritizing its local community. Unlike expansive resorts, this facility has cultivated a wide array of trails designed to accommodate every skill level, from novices to seasoned riders tackling the most demanding double black diamond technical sections on the East Coast. Allie Masten, the Director of Marketing, emphasizes that the park's distinctiveness lies in its deep commitment to the community that has flourished around it, fostering an environment where experienced riders mentor younger enthusiasts, promoting growth and skill progression on the trails.

Despite its smaller scale, Mt. Abram has made a substantial impact, operating its bike park from Thursday to Sunday during the summer season, offering access to 8.5 miles of diverse downhill trails spread across 14 segments and 1,000 vertical feet. The park’s lift system, though using fixed-grip lifts, is efficiently managed by employees who assist riders with their bikes. A significant aspect of Mt. Abram's success is its reliance on an in-house team of trail builders, who, without external grants or assistance, have meticulously developed a renowned bike park over approximately eight years. This team has become so adept that they are now sought after for gravity trail construction projects throughout the Northeast. Facing unique challenges like managing historical changes to the mountain's hydrology from previous ski area development, the builders have implemented robust water management systems, including uphill ditching and strategic placement of culverts and bridges, to ensure the sustainability and longevity of their trails.

The park continually expands its offerings, with new trails like Main Line, Drain Line, and the reconstructed George’s Jungle significantly enhancing the riding experience. Main Line, an advanced jump trail, offers multiple feature options for varied air time, while Drain Line provides a challenging technical ride with adaptable routes. George's Jungle, reimagined for sustainability, now serves as an excellent introductory trail. Astronaut Doctor, completed in 2025, represents the pinnacle of the park's technical terrain, featuring natural rocky elements stitched together into a continuous 1,000-foot descent from the summit. Looking ahead to 2026, plans include a 3,000-square-foot skills development area at the mountain's base, designed to help new riders master fundamental techniques before exploring the main trails. Ultimately, Mt. Abram embodies a vibrant spirit of community and dedication, offering a truly exceptional and inclusive mountain biking experience that celebrates the joy of riding together.
