MyWhoosh Implements Pioneering Anti-Doping Program for E-Cycling

MyWhoosh, a prominent virtual cycling platform, has announced the introduction of a comprehensive anti-doping and integrity testing program for its competitors. This initiative, set to begin on May 17, will involve around 700 selected riders and marks a significant step forward in ensuring fair play within the burgeoning world of e-racing. The platform, known for hosting the UCI Esports World Championships and offering substantial prize money through its Sunday Race Club, aims to establish a level playing field for all participants.

The newly implemented anti-doping measures are designed to safeguard the integrity of virtual cycling competitions. Through a partnership with International Doping Tests & Management (IDTM), MyWhoosh will conduct random drug tests on participants. Athletes may be notified for testing shortly before, during, or after events and will be required to provide samples such as urine, blood, or dried blood spots to designated personnel at their declared locations within a three-hour window. Non-compliance, including refusal or attempts to evade testing, will lead to severe penalties, including disqualification, forfeiture of prize money, and suspension from the platform.

Matt Smithson, Director of Esports & Game Operations at MyWhoosh, emphasized that the primary objective of this program is to foster trust and ensure equitable competition. As the Sunday Race Club expands, the need for stringent fairness standards becomes paramount. The goal is to protect athletes who compete cleanly and to guarantee that every podium finish is earned through legitimate effort, reinforcing faith in the global e-cycling community.

The Sunday Race Club offers a monthly prize pool of $300,000, distributed among individual and team winners across six categories, ranging from elite riders to category six participants. The selection process for testing will be based on various factors, including random selection, podium placements, detailed performance data analysis, and intelligence-led targeting, ensuring a robust and unpredictable testing environment.

This anti-doping initiative complements MyWhoosh's existing integrity systems, which meticulously monitor hardware, software, and performance data. Smithson highlighted that while mechanical cheating is a concern, the platform has robust verification processes in place. Riders are mandated to use specific trainers that provide two sources of power data, and they undergo a 'power passport' test, which includes video verification. This comprehensive approach allows the platform to capture a physiological profile of each athlete, including their power output and heart rate, further cementing the fairness of the competition. The introduction of drug testing, a pioneering move in e-racing, is expected to significantly enhance the perception of fairness for all competitors.
