Oura Smart Ring Gen 4: Advanced Health Tracking at a Discount

Smart rings are increasingly favored as an unobtrusive alternative to traditional wearables for monitoring personal health and fitness. These devices provide much of the biometric information found in cycling-focused smartwatches, yet they boast a more refined and stylish appearance.

While specialized cycling computers excel at capturing real-time performance metrics, smart rings offer a distinct focus. They delve into off-bike recovery aspects such as sleep quality, resting heart rate variability, and insights into optimal training loads for subsequent rides, along with dedicated women's health features. The Oura Gen 4 Smart Ring, currently available at a substantial discount on Amazon, presents an attractive option for those seeking sophisticated wellness tracking.

Recently, Oura, a San Francisco-based health technology firm, launched its Oura Smart Ring Gen 5 at a premium price point of £500. This makes the Amazon promotion on the previous Gen 4 model particularly appealing, offering up to 50% off, bringing the price down to £199.99.

In the UK, pricing for the Oura Gen 4 varies based on size and finish, and Oura recommends purchasing a £10 sizing kit beforehand, which is credited towards the ring's purchase. American consumers can find the Oura Smart Ring Gen 4 with a smaller 20% discount, retailing at $399.

In a review by Cycling Weekly North American Editor Anne-Marije Rook, the Oura Ring received a 4-star rating. She praised its continuous health monitoring capabilities, providing a holistic view of well-being through advanced features and accessible insights. Rook highlighted its effectiveness as a tool for optimizing overall health, particularly for cyclists.

Earlier versions of the Oura Ring were noted for their limitations in real-time activity tracking, such as heart rate transmission and GPS. This made them more suitable as supplementary tools for recovery rather than primary cycling trackers. However, the upgraded Oura Gen 4 addresses these concerns by incorporating live heart rate transmission, compatible with most cycling computers. Although GPS still relies on smartphone connectivity, the ring seamlessly integrates with a phone's GPS signal and the Oura app, allowing for route recording and Strava synchronization.
