Paul Magnier Achieves Hat-Trick Victory at Giro d'Italia Stage 18

French rider Paul Magnier, representing Soudal Quick-Step, clinched his third stage win at the Giro d'Italia during Thursday's Stage 18. He triumphed in a group sprint on the damp surfaces of Pieve di Soligo, marking a significant hat-trick for the young cyclist.

This victory, coming after a 15-day hiatus since his last win in Sofia on Stage 3, was particularly sweet for the 22-year-old. It also saw him reclaim the ciclamino jersey from Jhonatan Narvaez (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), establishing a commanding 37-point lead in the standings.

The stage, covering 171km, presented a challenging route that included a Category 4 climb just 10km from the finish line, raising doubts about a sprinter's success. However, despite numerous attacks, notably from former maglia rosa holder Alfonso Eulálio (Bahrain Victorious), the peloton ultimately regrouped in the final kilometers, setting the stage for a dramatic sprint finish.

Magnier, demonstrating exceptional form, expressed his surprise and gratitude after the race. He acknowledged his team's unwavering confidence, which proved crucial after he momentarily struggled on the initial climb. His teammates' support was instrumental in positioning him for the sprint, leading to his joyous triumph.

The French cyclist reflected on his achievements, stating he couldn't fully recall the intensity of the final moments. He expressed immense pride in securing three stage wins and wearing the pink and ciclamino jerseys, accomplishments he hadn't anticipated before the start of the Giro.

The race trajectory saw riders traverse from west to east across Italy's northern region. The parcours, while not entirely flat, was considered a potential opportunity for sprinters if conditions aligned. The inclusion of two categorized climbs, a Category 3 mid-stage and the decisive Category 4 Muro Ca'del Poggio near the end, posed a significant challenge that almost disrupted the sprinters' plans.

Initially, the general classification (GC) teams maintained a relaxed pace on the Ca'del Poggio, which favored sprinters like Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) and Magnier. However, Eulálio's aggressive attack, despite an earlier crash, forced the GC contenders into a chase that temporarily fragmented the peloton. The groups eventually merged with just 3.5km remaining.

In a twisting and technical finish, Magnier seized the opportunity. Expertly guided by his teammate Jasper Stuyven, he gained a crucial advantage around the final bend, securing a decisive win.

The 16th stage of the Giro d'Italia 2026, from Fai della Paganella to Pieve di Soligo, saw Paul Magnier claim victory in 3:46:50. He was followed by Eduardo Zambanini (Ita) Bahrain Victorious and Jonathan Milan (Ita) Lidl-Trek. Jonas Vingegaard (Den) Visma-Lease a Bike maintained his overall lead in the general classification with a time of 70:44:04, holding a 4:03 advantage over Felix Gall (Aut) Decathlon CMA CGM.
