Pinarello Unveils New X Series Endurance Road Bike: Comfort, Versatility, and Integrated Storage

The Pinarello X Series, following the acclaimed Dogma X, solidifies its role as a dedicated endurance platform. The Italian manufacturer aims to attract new customers by offering a diverse range of specifications, carbon fiber grades, and price points. The geometry of the X Series remains intentionally more relaxed than its racing counterpart, the Dogma X, yet it maintains responsive handling and a strong rider-bike connection. Frame angles are carried over from the previous model, achieving a harmonious balance between compliance and traditional endurance characteristics. A significant upgrade is the increased maximum tire clearance, now supporting up to 40mm. This enhancement provides riders with a wider array of tire choices, even allowing for narrow gravel tires for those inclined to venture onto varied terrains.

Key comfort-enhancing features include Pinarello's innovative X-Stay arrangement, a double-arm, four-point configuration designed to minimize road vibrations and chatter by attaching lower on the seat tube. The elliptical steerer tube, inherited from the Dogma X and F, routes brake hoses internally, preventing damage and improving front-end rigidity. A notable addition is the integrated in-frame storage system, located in the downtube below the bottle cage. This bespoke compartment houses an elongated tool bag, negating the need for external saddle bags. Furthermore, a new D-shaped adaptive seatpost, inspired by the Grevil F, works in concert with the X-Stays to absorb road imperfections, offering 10mm of longitudinal flex while simultaneously reducing weight.

The extended tire clearance is a strategic move, ensuring the X Series is future-proof and highly adaptable. This feature, surpassing many competitors' 38mm limits, greatly expands the bike's utility, allowing riders to tackle diverse surfaces, including smooth gravel roads, by accommodating knobby gravel tires.

The X Series is meticulously engineered with distinct frame molds and tooling, ensuring it's not a mere derivative of its siblings. Pinarello offers the X Series in three different carbon fiber grades to suit various rider preferences. The top-tier X9 and X7 models feature Pinarello's premium TorayCa T900 layup, renowned for its performance. The X5 and X3 utilize T700 carbon fiber, chosen for its excellent vibration-damping properties, while the entry-level X1 employs T600, prioritizing durability and affordability. All frames, excluding the X1, are UDH compatible. Despite the variations in carbon layups, the system weights across the endurance category are consistent. The X9, weighing 7.7kg, is the lightest, followed by the X7 (8.1kg), X5 (8.75kg), X3 (8.85kg), and the X1 (9.05kg).

Globally, the Pinarello X Series is available with Shimano groupsets, a commercial decision by the brand. The X9 and X7 models come equipped with Shimano Dura-Ace and Ultegra Di2, respectively. The X5 and X3 feature the reliable Shimano 105 Di2, while the X1 offers a mechanical Shimano 105 option. Notably, a SRAM Force AXS build is exclusively offered for the US market.

Initial test rides of the top-of-the-line X9 model in Italy's Treviso region highlighted its balanced performance. Despite its relaxed geometry compared to the Dogma X, the X Series delivers a stable and connected ride. The X9, with its premium carbon and Shimano Dura-Ace Di2, weighed around 7.7kg. Its aesthetics, particularly the Shadow Violet colorway, drew considerable attention. The geometry, with a 72.25-degree head tube and 73.25-degree seat tube angle, a 376.7mm reach, and a 588.2mm stack, positions it perfectly within the traditional endurance category, offering a comfortable yet sporty riding position. The 38mm Most Competition tires and wheels excel at absorbing road imperfections, and the bike demonstrates remarkable stability and confidence during descents, thanks to the responsive Most Talon UltraFast handlebar and elliptical steerer tube.

The Pinarello X Series includes five models, available in nine sizes (43-60cm) and eight color options. The X9 (not available in the UK) is priced at $11,000/€11,000. The X7, priced at £6,500/$8,200/€7,900, comes with Ultegra Di2. The X5 and X3, both with Shimano 105 Di2, are priced at £5,000/$5,500/€5,100 and £4,400/$4,750/€4,500, respectively. The X1, the most affordable at £3,150/$2,950/€3,200, features Shimano 105 mechanical.
