Rimpact Unveils Tuned Mass Damper for Gravel Bikes, Bringing Downhill Technology to Rougher Terrain

The latest advancements in cycling technology are extending from downhill disciplines to the realm of gravel biking. Rimpact has pioneered a new application for tuned mass dampers (TMDs), a technology previously celebrated in competitive mountain biking for its ability to smooth out aggressive descents and improve race times. With the introduction of the TMD Gravel, Rimpact seeks to bring a similar level of ride refinement to gravel cyclists.

TMD technology, which finds applications in various industries from automotive to civil engineering, fundamentally works by mitigating oscillations. In the context of cycling, Rimpact's device features a suspended mass between springs. Upon encountering rough terrain, the front wheel's upward motion is counteracted by the downward movement of this internal mass, and vice versa. While earlier versions of Rimpact's TMD were integrated into fork steerer tubes, the TMD Gravel presents an external solution for the unique requirements of gravel bikes, particularly those with carbon forks that may not support internal systems. This new iteration attaches to the bike via its front brake mount and is compatible with flat-mount brakes and 140 or 160mm rotors. Although it adds approximately 450 grams to the bike's front, the company suggests that the improved ride quality and fatigue reduction could outweigh the weight penalty.
