In recent discussions, experts like Tom Ament, owner of Vassago Bikes, and Joe McEwan, founder of Starling Cycles, shed light on the characteristics of 32-inch mountain bike wheels. Ament highlighted their enhanced rolling speed and efficiency, enabling riders to tackle higher gears with greater ease. McEwan, drawing from his experience with the Starling Big Bird, acknowledged a noticeable, albeit marginal, improvement in roll-over performance. He pointed out that while top-tier cross-country racers might find these marginal gains significant, average riders would likely benefit more from consistent training than from the slight performance edge of 32-inch wheels. McEwan particularly emphasized the superior gyroscopic stability of 32-inch wheels, noting their excellent ground tracking and improved traction. Additionally, these larger wheels are less prone to getting snagged on trail obstacles like rocks and roots, and paired with high-volume tires, they offer a smoother ride. For exceptionally tall cyclists, 32-inch wheels also provide a more natural and proportionate bike fit.

However, the advantages come with inherent challenges. The increased stability of 32-inch wheels compromises cornering agility, leading to a larger turning radius. Furthermore, the market currently offers limited choices for bikes and components in this size, driving up prices significantly. A hand-built 32/29 mullet bike like Starling's Big Bird can cost upwards of $7,000, reflecting the expense of specialized frames, forks, wheels, and tires. The increased material required for larger wheels also translates to greater weight. Bike fit presents another hurdle, especially for shorter riders. Ament noted the difficulty of maintaining a low bottom bracket height comparable to 29ers while accommodating the larger wheels, which can make it hard for smaller riders to shift their weight behind the saddle. The elevated front end of 32-inch bikes further complicates handling for shorter individuals, even with specialized negative-drop stems.

Reflecting on the historical context, the adoption of 29-inch wheels in the early 2000s, pioneered by innovators like Gary Fisher, initially targeted cross-country racing. This transition was gradual, taking over a decade to become mainstream across various mountain bike categories. The industry then benefited from an existing infrastructure of compatible components and the ease of modifying metal frames. In contrast, the current transition to 32-inch wheels faces different challenges. The infrastructure for 32-inch components is not yet established on a wide scale, and the shift from aluminum to carbon fiber for frame manufacturing means that adapting to new wheel sizes requires significant investment in new molds. Despite these hurdles, a demand for 32-inch wheels exists, particularly for taller riders seeking a more proportional and efficient ride. DirtySixer founder David Folch envisions 32-inch wheels as an additional solution rather than a replacement for existing sizes, catering to riders over 5'8" or 5'9" who are curious about the benefits. Yet, McEwan expresses concerns that this trend could make mountain biking even more expensive and less accessible, as upgrading to 32-inch wheels often necessitates purchasing an entirely new bike.

The emergence of 32-inch wheels in mountain biking represents an intriguing evolution, balancing innovative performance gains with practical considerations of cost, accessibility, and industry infrastructure. While offering benefits such as improved roll-over, stability, and a better fit for taller riders, the current limitations in component availability, higher costs, and compromised maneuverability pose significant challenges.
