Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) has officially named Ryan Callaghan as its incoming President and Chief Executive Officer. This significant leadership change, effective January 1, 2026, marks a new chapter for the prominent conservation organization. Callaghan, widely recognized for his dedication to public lands advocacy and his role in the hunting and angling community, is expected to bring a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to BHA's ongoing mission.

Callaghan steps into the role previously held by Patrick Berry, who departed in July after an 18-month tenure. Before Berry, Land Tawney led the organization for over a decade, shaping much of its modern identity and impact. BHA's board of directors highlighted Callaghan's proven track record in championing public lands and his strong connections within both grassroots communities and national conservation circles as key factors in his selection.

Currently serving as the Director of Conservation at MeatEater, Callaghan has been a vocal proponent of public-lands access, the preservation of natural habitats, and engaging hunters in responsible practices. His history with BHA is extensive, having previously chaired its North American board and contributed to the organization's efforts for more than ten years. His continued involvement with MeatEater and collaborations with outdoor brands like First Lite underscore his commitment to fostering partnerships across the industry.

The leadership at BHA believes Callaghan's appointment will significantly enhance the organization's reach and influence. His blend of experience in media and conservation outreach is poised to elevate BHA's visibility among a broader audience of hunters, anglers, and legislative bodies. Chris Jenkins, the board chair, expressed strong confidence in Callaghan, describing his appointment as an ideal outcome for BHA, given his authenticity and deep roots within the outdoor community.

As Callaghan prepares to assume his new responsibilities, he will engage in a transition period through the end of the year, working closely with BHA staff and state chapters to define strategic priorities for 2026. His overarching objectives include expanding membership, fortifying existing partnerships, and upholding a nonpartisan stance on critical conservation matters. Since its inception in 2004, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers has evolved into a leading voice for public-land users across North America, steadfastly advocating for access, habitat preservation, and ethical hunting and fishing principles.
