Shimano Introduces New GRX RX717 Electronic Shifting for Gravel Bikes at a More Accessible Price

Shimano has recently expanded its GRX gravel component lineup by introducing a more budget-friendly, Di2-compatible second-tier option. This new RX717 series aims to make electronic shifting more accessible to gravel riders and commuters. While it still offers the advanced performance of electronic shifting, the RX600/610 series with mechanical shifting now serves as the entry-level choice in the GRX hierarchy.

Shimano's Latest Gravel Component Offering: The RX717 Series

Shimano, a leading innovator in cycling technology, has officially rolled out its new GRX RX717 components, designed to enhance the gravel riding experience. These components bring electronic shifting capabilities to a slightly more affordable price point, making high-performance gear accessible to a broader range of cyclists.

The RX717 series is exclusively a 1x12 groupset, meticulously engineered to handle diverse terrains. It features a long-cage rear derailleur (SGS) capable of accommodating a wide-range 10-51T 12-speed cassette, ensuring smooth transitions across various gradients. The system includes a right-hand dual-control brake lever equipped with two Di2 buttons for precise electronic shifts, complemented by a left-hand lever dedicated to braking. As expected from modern gravel components, all brakes are hydraulic, delivering reliable stopping power.

For optimal performance, Shimano recommends pairing these new components with an RX610 chainset, an M6100/M7100 12-speed cassette, an M6100 chain, and RT-CL700 brake rotors. However, the system's versatility allows for other compatible combinations, providing riders with flexibility in their setups.

A key highlight of the RX717 series is its fully wireless Di2 platform, which ensures rapid and accurate shifting. This system boasts impressive compatibility with all Shimano 12-speed wireless shifters across its road and mountain bike ranges, including GRX, Dura-Ace, Ultegra, 105, XTR, XT, and Deore flat bar Di2 shifters. This extensive compatibility allows cyclists to seamlessly integrate the RX717 into their existing Shimano ecosystems.

The RD-RX717 rear derailleur incorporates SHADOW RD+ technology, which contributes to its slim and low-profile design, reducing the likelihood of damage from impacts. Furthermore, its Automatic Impact Recovery function intelligently resets the derailleur to its original position after an impact, safeguarding its functionality. The derailleur body is robustly constructed with wide and well-braced linkages, while solid pulleys are designed to minimize debris ingress, enhancing durability.

The SGS Long Cage's impressive capacity allows for the use of 10-51T cassettes, catering to the demands of challenging gravel routes. Powering the system is a removable onboard battery, offering an estimated lifespan of 435-621 miles, depending on riding conditions. Riders are advised to replace the battery before embarking on extended journeys.

Connectivity is another strong suit of the RX717 series. The right-hand lever and rear derailleur can be connected to the Shimano E-TUBE app, enabling personalized adjustments such as shifting speed, custom button assignments, and firmware updates. Riders can also fine-tune the lever reach by up to 16mm using a hex key, ensuring a comfortable fit for various hand sizes. The right lever is powered by two CR1632 coin-shaped batteries, which provide an estimated lifespan of 3.5 to 4 years.

The left lever functions solely as a hydraulic brake lever, consistent with a 1x setup. It is available in two versions, distinguished only by 'GRX' or 'Shimano' branding. The Shimano-branded BL-RS717-LS offers a cost-effective option for riders already using Dura-Ace ST-R9270, Ultegra ST-R8170, and Shimano 105 ST-R7170, as the levers share similar ergonomics and feel.

Pricing for the new components includes £299.99 for a right-hand STI lever paired with a BR-RX410 front caliper (pre-bled), or £219.99 for the lever alone. The left-hand side is priced at £279.99 with the equivalent rear caliper, or £179.99 for the lever only. The GRX rear derailleur RD-RX717 is available for £379.99, representing a £50 saving compared to the RX827 model's recommended retail price.
