Shimano has unveiled a brand-new SPD-SLR clipless pedal system for its high-end Dura-Ace and Ultegra series, aiming to redefine the connection between rider and bicycle. This groundbreaking system features a substantially redesigned pedal platform and cleats, promising a reduced stack height, swifter engagement, and lighter components than its predecessor, SPD-SL. Despite visual similarities, the new SPD-SLR pedals and cleats are not interchangeable with the older SPD-SL system, marking a significant evolution in Shimano's road cycling technology.

Shimano's Next-Generation Cycling Technology: A Deep Dive

On Thursday, September 17, 2026, Shimano introduced its latest innovation in cycling technology: the SPD-SLR clipless pedal system, alongside new S-Phyre road shoes. This launch represents a major overhaul of their road-oriented clip-in pedal system, which had seen only incremental updates since its 2003 debut. The new design focuses on enhancing rider performance through several key improvements.

One of the most notable features of the SPD-SLR system is its reduced stack height. Shimano engineers have meticulously redesigned both the pedal platform and the cleats, resulting in a 2.3mm reduction in the distance between the rider's foot and the pedal axle. The Dura-Ace PD-R9300 pedal now boasts an impressive stack height of 12.5mm, while the Ultegra PD-R8200 pedal measures 13.3mm. When paired with the new S-Phyre shoes, an additional 0.7mm reduction is achieved, creating an even more stable and efficient pedaling platform. This lower stack height is designed to improve power transfer and enhance bike control, whether climbing, sprinting, or maintaining a steady pace.

Engagement with the SPD-SLR pedal is also touted as quicker than with the previous SPD-SL system. Shimano has implemented a wider catch zone and a narrower 10.5-degree engagement angle, a significant change from the SPD-SL's 15.5-degree angle. This adjustment aims to allow riders to clip in more naturally and confidently. While daily road riders might not constantly think about clipping in, this refinement could offer a subtle yet noticeable improvement in overall riding experience.

Furthermore, the new SPD-SLR cleats are remarkably lighter, weighing up to 22% less than their SPD-SL counterparts. For instance, a new CL-SL 120 cleat, including bolts and washers, weighs only 55g, a 32g saving per pair compared to the SPD-SL equivalent (SM-SH12). Shimano has also introduced high-contrast alignment markings on the cleats, simplifying installation and repositioning for riders to accurately replicate their preferred setup.

The Dura-Ace PD-R9300 pedal, aimed at professional racers and performance-focused riders, offers exceptional stability through an ultra-wide platform. It features an integrated stainless steel contact plate for improved engagement and increased interface stiffness, alongside an axle design with wide bearings for more even load distribution. This results in an 11% stiffness increase compared to the Ultegra PD-R8200, ensuring direct power transfer under maximum load.

The Ultegra PD-R8200 pedal brings the same SPD-SLR architecture to a broader range of riders. It features a lightweight resin body with a stainless steel contact plate, providing excellent stiffness and efficient power transfer, albeit with slightly less stiffness and higher rotational resistance than the Dura-Ace model.

Complementing the new pedals are the S-Phyre SH-RC910 and SH-RC810 shoes. The top-tier S-Phyre SH-RC910 shoes are crafted for world-class racing performance, featuring a hollow carbon midsole, a carbon fiber heel cup for firm foot retention, and dual Boa dials. Both models incorporate Shimano's new Dynalast 2.0 fit, designed to improve foot hold and allow for more natural forefoot movement under pedaling load, thereby reducing foot fatigue during extended rides.

Shimano offers four distinct SPD-SLR cleat options: CL-SL100 (red tips) for fixed-position, direct power transfer; CL-SL110 (yellow tips) providing 6 degrees of float for comfort and reduced joint stress; CL-SL120 (blue tips) with 2 degrees of rotational float balancing efficiency and limited movement; and CL-SL130 (grey tips) which offers increased adjustment range for fixed-mount outsoles, though it foregoes the lower stack height and weight benefits.

It is crucial to note that SPD-SLR cleats and pedals are not backward compatible with the older SPD-SL system. While SPD-SLR cleats can be used with existing Shimano SPD-SL road shoes, Shimano emphasizes that optimal performance is achieved when the entire SPD-SLR system (shoes, cleats, and pedals) is used together. Shimano has confirmed its commitment to continuing support for the SPD-SL system, ensuring the availability of cleats for the many existing users worldwide.

The new Dura-Ace R9300 Carbon SPD-SLR pedals are priced at £199.99, and the Ultegra R8200 Carbon SPD-SLR pedals at £139.99. All SPD-SLR cleats retail for £24.99. The S-Phyre RC9 (RC910) shoes are £389.99, and the RC8 (RC810) shoes are £319.99.

The introduction of Shimano's SPD-SLR system represents a bold step forward in road cycling technology. While the lack of cross-compatibility with older systems might initially pose a challenge for some riders, the promised improvements in stack height, engagement speed, and weight reduction suggest a significant enhancement in performance and comfort.
