Texas Angler Lands Massive Bass in O.H. Ivie Lake

A West Texas fishing guide recently achieved a remarkable feat by reeling in a colossal largemouth bass, further solidifying O.H. Ivie Lake's status as a premier destination for trophy fish. Tristan Marsh, 23, embarked on a solo fishing expedition late Sunday afternoon, returning to a familiar, deep flat area known for harboring large bass that elude angling pressure. Marsh, with eight years of experience on Ivie and several as a guide during the spring's prime bass season, meticulously tracked his target using forward-facing sonar. Around 6 p.m., his persistence paid off as he located a substantial fish.

Marsh employed an 8-foot plug rod paired with a 6th Sense Panorama soft plastic lure, designed to mimic a crappie. He rigged this bait on a 10/0 Shaky Head 7/8-ounce jig head to ensure a rapid descent to the fish he observed on his sonar. His technique involved carefully monitoring the bass to differentiate between smaller males and the larger females, ensuring only the latter would take the bait. Upon a distinct vertical tail-up movement from a female bass, Marsh expertly set the hook. Following a spirited fight where the fish repeatedly attempted to escape by jumping, Marsh, utilizing a robust rod and 25-pound fluorocarbon line, successfully netted the powerful creature after its third leap.

Realizing the magnitude of his catch, Marsh, whose boat scale was inoperable, promptly contacted a friend, Brett Cannon, to assist with weighing the fish. Initial measurements at Cannon's residence confirmed the bass exceeded 13 pounds, leading Marsh to Elm Creek Marina, equipped with certified scales. There, the bass registered an impressive 13.65 pounds, measuring 26.5 inches in length with a 20.75-inch girth. This extraordinary specimen was subsequently donated to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's ShareLunker program, contributing to ongoing conservation efforts. Marsh's catch is now among over 60 Legacy ShareLunkers from O.H. Ivie, a lake renowned for its ideal big bass habitat, featuring extensive flooded vegetation, and notably, the source of Texas's seventh heaviest largemouth ever recorded in 2022.
