After nearly two decades of meticulous planning and dedicated construction, the state of Texas is preparing to unveil its 90th state park, the magnificent Palo Pinto Mountains State Park. This sprawling 4,871-acre natural sanctuary, situated approximately 90 minutes west of Fort Worth, is poised to become a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The park’s development, spearheaded by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) in collaboration with Rock Solid Trail Contracting, represents a significant investment in public recreation, promising a rich tapestry of activities and amenities for visitors.

New Horizons for Outdoor Enthusiasts: Palo Pinto Mountains State Park's Grand Opening

The long-awaited Palo Pinto Mountains State Park, Texas’s 90th state park and the first new one in North Texas in over 25 years, is on the verge of opening its gates to the public. This extensive 4,871-acre park near Strawn, Texas, is the culmination of a two-decade-long vision and a $30 million investment. The park's development, led by Park Superintendent James Adams and Rock Solid Trail Contracting, featuring Adam Munich, involved overcoming numerous challenges, from land acquisition to budget adjustments.

The journey began in 2006 with a land sale that funded the initial acquisition for Palo Pinto in 2011. Subsequent land purchases and a 99-year lease from the city of Strawn expanded the park to its current size. After years of public input and design, construction commenced in 2021. The initial phase focused on essential infrastructure, including roads, utilities, and foundational facilities. Following this, the focus shifted to creating diverse recreational spaces, including multiple campgrounds and a 16-mile network of multi-use trails.

Rock Solid Trail Contracting meticulously crafted the trail system between late 2023 and early 2024. These trails are designed to be accessible to a wide range of users, including hikers, equestrians, and mountain bikers. Emphasizing safety and inclusivity, many trails are four to six feet wide, allowing for easy passage and enabling emergency vehicle access for injured visitors. While predominantly wide, the park also features about a mile of traditional narrow singletrack, offering varied experiences for different skill levels.

Beyond its expansive trail system, Palo Pinto Mountains State Park will offer a rich array of amenities. Visitors can choose from 60 campsites, including equestrian sites with stalls, standard RV sites with hookups, primitive walk-in sites, and remote backcountry sites. The park also features a large fishing pier, a canoe launch, and various day-use areas equipped with picnic tables, shade shelters, and a pavilion. A special preview event on January 1, 2026, offered the public a glimpse into this magnificent new recreational area, with a full public opening expected in early 2026.
