Tour de France Final Stage Modified Due to Wildfires

The concluding segment of the 2026 Tour de France cycling event has been modified, with its length reduced in response to ongoing wildfires across France. Authorities have redirected law enforcement personnel, originally designated for race security, to assist in battling the extensive blazes, particularly in the Gironde region.

Consequently, the 21st stage, initially slated to commence in Thoiry, a locality near Paris, will now begin directly on the Champs-Élysées. This revised route will feature two additional circuits of the famed Parisian avenue before integrating the planned Montmartre circuit. This announcement was made by the race organizers on Saturday afternoon, underscoring the necessity of these changes given the national emergency.

While the ceremonial team presentation will still occur in Thoiry, participants will subsequently be transported to the capital via bus. The adjusted stage now measures 89 kilometers, a significant reduction from its original 133 kilometers. This decision highlights the severity of the wildfires and the imperative to prioritize public safety and emergency response efforts.

A joint statement released by the Prefecture of Police and ASO, the organization behind the Tour, emphasized the full mobilization of emergency services to combat the fires and secure affected communities. It detailed the redeployment of internal security forces to bolster response efforts in fire-stricken zones.

The statement conveyed: "In a spirit of national solidarity with the affected regions and their inhabitants, a decision has been made to alter the route of the final stage between Thoiry and Paris, scheduled for Sunday, July 26, 2026." The Prefect of Police and the Director of the Tour de France acknowledged the dedication of all those involved in fighting the wildfires and extended their full support to the impacted communities. They also expressed gratitude to the riders, teams, local authorities, partners, and the public for their understanding of these extraordinary measures necessitated by the prevailing circumstances.

The revised start time for the official race will be 5:50 PM CEST, with the anticipated finish at 7:45 PM. The race caravan will depart from Thoiry at 1:20 PM, heading directly to the final circuit in Paris, followed by the team presentation at 3:40 PM in Thoiry. The wildfires, which have led to the evacuation of nearly 200,000 individuals from areas surrounding Bordeaux in southwestern France, have already consumed over 32,000 hectares of land, as reported by the French newspaper Le Monde. These destructive fires are a stark consequence of an exceptionally hot summer, widely attributed to the ongoing global climate crisis.
