Matxin Joxean Fernández, the head of UAE Team Emirates, recently shared insights with the Spanish media regarding the escalating issue of fan interactions during training. He noted that the prevailing trend of seeking online exposure has led to situations where fans, caught up in the excitement, record cyclists in an unsafe manner, often encroaching on traffic lanes. Fernández highlighted the potential for misunderstandings, where a rider's firm reaction to a dangerous situation might be misconstrued if the full context is not understood.

Implementing Protective Protocols During Training

To mitigate these risks, the team has introduced motorcycle escorts for Pogačar, particularly during training camps. Fernández cited an example from a recent camp in Alicante, where a motorcycle was positioned behind Pogačar to ensure the integrity of his small training group. This strategy aims to prevent larger groups from forming due to fans joining in, which could impede traffic and create dangerous conditions for both professional riders and other road users. The outriders facilitate safe passage for vehicles while maintaining a controlled environment for the athletes.

The Tour de France champion, Tadej Pogačar, recently used his Strava account to appeal for greater respect from fans after an unpleasant altercation with an impatient individual seeking a photograph. Similarly, Jonas Vingegaard, another prominent cyclist, was involved in a crash during a training ride last month while attempting to distance himself from an intrusive fan, which subsequently led to him missing the UAE Tour. These events highlight the tangible dangers posed by overly enthusiastic fan interactions.
