Uncertainty Surrounds Closure of Prominent London Cycling Hub

A well-known cycling showroom and coffee shop, VIA Atelier, located in London, has unexpectedly ceased operations. The establishment, situated in Coal Drops Yard near Kings Cross Station, has been closed for six weeks, with its future remaining ambiguous.

On July 24th, a "notice of forfeiture by peaceable re-entry" was affixed to the storefront. This notice clarified that the landlord had taken possession of the property due to the tenant's failure to adhere to lease terms regarding rent payments, indicating that overdue rents had not been settled.

In response to the situation, VIA Atelier released a statement on Instagram last month, acknowledging the closure of its café and showroom. The company attributed this to an unforeseen series of events and expressed its commitment to reopening. They also extended gratitude to their community and patrons for their understanding during this challenging period.

Legal documents, signed by Hogan Lovells Cadwalader, confirm the landlord's intention to re-lease the premises promptly. Sources indicate that the search for new tenants is ongoing. VIA Atelier, co-founded by designer Michael Sodeau and chef Anthony Demetre, first opened its doors in 2022. It became a hub for cyclists, offering products from brands such as POC, Pas Normal Studios, Q36.5, and Standert. The venue also hosted various events, including product launches and race watch-alongs, and organized its own VIA Criterium race.

Despite the closure of the main showroom, the bicycle workshop associated with VIA Atelier has continued to operate. The forfeiture notice specified that VIA had a two-week window, until August 7th, to retrieve its inventory from the premises, after which the landlord reserved the right to sell or dispose of the goods. An additional notice from VIA reassured members that the cycling club's weekly rides would proceed as scheduled, emphasizing their efforts to resolve the current predicament and thanking their community for continued support.

The sudden closure of VIA Atelier stems from a landlord's forfeiture notice issued in late July, citing outstanding rent payments. This action has led to the cycling showroom and café's prolonged shutdown, with the property now being actively marketed for new occupancy.
