USA Cycling Unveils New Youth Development Grant to Broaden Track Cycling Participation

May 27, 2026, 11:33 PM

USA Cycling has officially rolled out a new initiative aimed at nurturing young talent within the sport. This innovative youth development plan offers grants designed to draw promising junior athletes, specifically those between 14 and 18 years old, into the realm of track cycling. The program is not limited to those already within cycling disciplines but also seeks to attract individuals from entirely different sports, broadening the talent pool.

The inspiration behind this "Youth Track Cycling Development Grant" stems from the notable achievements of the "Search for Speed" talent transfer program. This successful predecessor focused on introducing track sprint cycling to a wider and more diverse audience across Los Angeles and Southern California. By building on this model, the new grant program intends to empower velodromes, clubs, and coaches by providing them with the necessary resources to identify and cultivate young cyclists, fostering a new generation of track competitors.

The immediate objective of this grant is to significantly increase youth participation in track cycling at local velodromes. Looking ahead, the long-term vision is to establish clear progression routes for these athletes, enabling them to compete in events such as the Junior Track National Championships and High School Track National Championships, and ultimately to be identified as potential candidates for future national teams. USA Cycling's Director of Membership, Eric Bennett, emphasized the sport's history in developing elite athletes and the grant's role in creating welcoming entry points and strengthening connections within the cycling community. Two grants, each valued at $2,500, will be awarded to programs that present structured curricula focused on junior rider development and transition into track racing. Applications are open to velodromes, cycling clubs, and USA Cycling-certified coaches, with a panel evaluating proposals based on their potential impact.

This forward-thinking initiative by USA Cycling not only dismantles financial barriers but also provides invaluable structured opportunities for aspiring young athletes. By investing in diverse talent and offering clear development pathways, the program sets the stage for a vibrant future in track cycling, fostering athletic excellence and promoting a healthy, active lifestyle among youth. It exemplifies a commitment to growth and inclusivity within the sport, promising to unearth the next generation of champions.
