Wattbike Faces Steep Financial Decline with £5M Loss
Indoor fitness giant Wattbike has announced a substantial financial deficit, recording a £5 million loss for the fiscal year concluding September 30, 2024. This marks the third consecutive year the company has operated at a loss, reflecting broader challenges within the exercise equipment sector post-pandemic. The firm, known for its high-performance indoor bikes, is navigating a period of reduced consumer spending and increased operational expenses, though strategic moves like new product launches and a recent acquisition aim to steer it back towards fiscal health.
Wattbike (Holdings) Limited's latest financial disclosures reveal a loss of £4,914,947, an improvement from previous years' deficits of £6.9 million in 2023 and £8.8 million in 2022. The company's last profitable year was 2021, when it saw earnings of £806,056, benefiting from a surge in demand for home fitness solutions during the global health crisis. However, this period of prosperity was short-lived, as the industry soon faced what Wattbike's chief financial officer, Peter Lay, described as 'suppressed levels of consumer demand' and 'inflated product and supply chain costs.'
Lay emphasized that despite the inherent quality and strong reputation of Wattbike's products, the recovery across the entire sector has been sluggish. This challenging environment led to an 8% dip in revenue during the recent fiscal year. In response, the company's leadership implemented aggressive measures to bolster gross margins and curtail operating expenditures. Turnover for the period stood at just under £12.5 million, significantly lower than the over £32 million recorded in 2021. This revenue was largely offset by the cost of goods sold, totaling £8.7 million, and administrative overheads of £5.4 million, which encompass expenses such as facility upkeep, utilities, and employee wages.
Looking ahead to 2025, Lay cautioned that market conditions are expected to remain difficult. A pivotal development for Wattbike occurred in July of the current year when it was acquired by Interactive Strength Inc., a US-based entity listed on NASDAQ under the ticker TRNR. This acquisition integrated Wattbike into a portfolio of fitness brands that includes CLIMBR and FORME. Lay expressed confidence that being part of this new corporate group will enable Wattbike to achieve sustainable growth in the coming years.
Stephen Loftus, Wattbike's CEO, provided an update on the company's performance beyond the reported accounting period, noting encouraging progress toward regaining profitability. He highlighted substantial improvements in profit margins, a leaner cost structure, and the successful introduction of two major new products as foundational steps for future expansion. The Proton bike, launched in September 2024, aims to broaden the company's footprint in the residential health and fitness market. This was followed by the February 2025 debut of the Air Pro, an advanced commercial air bike equipped with an integrated touchscreen, targeted at elite sports, educational institutions, and gym operators. The financial upside from these product releases is anticipated to materialize increasingly in subsequent periods.
Wattbike's indoor training devices, first introduced in 2008 in collaboration with British Cycling, have become a staple for professional athletes across various disciplines, including track cycling, football, and rugby. Today, the Nottingham-headquartered brand operates in a highly competitive home training market, vying for consumers alongside established players such as Peloton, Zwift, and Wahoo.
Despite its recent financial setbacks, the company remains optimistic about its future trajectory. The strategic acquisition by Interactive Strength Inc., coupled with a renewed focus on product innovation and operational efficiency, positions Wattbike to overcome current market headwinds. The successful reception of its new offerings, the Proton and Air Pro, suggests a potential revitalization of its market share and a pathway towards sustained financial recovery and leadership in the indoor cycling and fitness technology space.
