Angler Arrested for Allegedly Tampering with Bass in Fishing Tournament

A recent fishing competition at Lake Fork, Texas, has become the center of controversy after a participant was taken into custody for allegedly manipulating a fish's weight. This event comes shortly after a similar incident in 2022, where two individuals faced legal action for adding weights to their catch in a different competition. The incident unfolded when Curtis Lee Daniels, a participant in the Big Bass Splash tournament, presented a medium-sized bass that raised suspicions among event organizers. Employing a metal-detecting device, officials discovered unusual items within the fish. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) was then called upon to investigate further. A game warden performed an examination, confirming the presence of three 3/4-ounce sinkers inside the fish. The TPWD noted that these weights showed no signs of natural erosion, and similar items were reportedly found in Daniels' boat. Consequently, Daniels was arrested and accused of violating fishing tournament regulations. Due to the significant prize value exceeding $10,000, the charge is classified as a third-degree felony, potentially leading to imprisonment or substantial financial penalties.

Chris Bennett of Sealy Outdoors, co-organizer of the tournament, expressed profound disappointment over the situation, acknowledging that such actions tarnish the reputation of bass fishing tournaments. Despite the unfortunate circumstances, Bennett emphasized the organizers' swift and appropriate response by immediately involving game wardens upon detecting irregularities.
