Breckenridge Redefines Aspen Alley: Exclusive Downhill Mountain Biking and New Multi-Use Trails

Breckenridge, Colorado, is actively addressing the increasing congestion on its beloved multi-use trails, particularly the nearly 1.5-mile Aspen Alley. This scenic pathway, renowned for its stunning aspen groves, especially during the vibrant autumn season, has seen escalating conflicts between hikers, runners, and mountain bikers due to its immense popularity. The town's solution involves a strategic redesignation of Aspen Alley and the introduction of new trails to enhance user experience and connectivity within its growing community.

To mitigate these user conflicts, Breckenridge plans to transform Aspen Alley into a downhill-only mountain biking trail. This decision comes after numerous reports of near-misses and general overcrowding, making it challenging for different user groups to coexist safely, especially during peak seasons. Duke Barlow, Breckenridge's Open Space and Trails Manager, emphasized the difficulty of managing diverse user groups on a single congested trail. In parallel with this change, the town proposes a new trail, running alongside the existing Aspen Alley, specifically designed for hikers, runners, and uphill mountain bikers. This new route will feature a wider tread and gentler grades to improve accessibility and safety for non-downhill riders, also offering enhanced views of the valley and traversing a uniquely lush hillside. Additionally, Breckenridge is developing the 'North Barton' trail, a new connector aimed at linking expanding residential areas to the existing trail network, aligning with the town's vision of encouraging walking and biking over vehicular use.

The current Aspen Alley, originally a mining trail, was adapted over a decade ago to be more mountain bike-friendly, featuring turns and berms that increased speeds. By converting it to a downhill-only mountain biking trail, Breckenridge acknowledges its appeal to mountain bikers while ensuring the safety of all outdoor enthusiasts. Future enhancements to the 'old' Aspen Alley, such as additional features for intermediate downhill flow, are also under consideration.
